Sir Frank Short
The Mouth of the Thames – Isle of Sheppey in distance

1891

About the Item

Mezzotint after J.M.W. Turner, Signed in pencil. Ref: Hardie 58. This seascape is one of Frank Short’s finest mezzotint works after J.M.W. Turner. This comparatively large mezzotint was made as an independent plate and not as part of a series. Not only was Frank Short a master in the medium of mezzotint, he also worked to document the practice and pass on the knowledge. He revived the practices of mezzotint and aquatint engraving, and wrote about printmaking to educate a wider public.
