BIO/ ARTIST STATEMENT - BOTANICAL STUDIES Born in the south of France, Véronique Gambier started to paint at the age of 12 under the guidance of French Master Pierre Pallut, developing a strong sense of color and abstraction. She attended The College of Fine Art of Toulon and Luminy College of Fine Art in Marseille. Beginning at the age of 17, Gambier participated in several group shows in the south of France. Always drawn towards texture as well as color, she chose to pursue a career in fashion. This lead her to Paris, London and then New York. After working in fashion, then as a Graphic Designer, Gambier decided to devote her time to painting. Today, Gambier is committed on a full-time basis to her artwork and exhibits in solo and group and exhibitions in the New York area. The works in Botanical Studies are comprised of flowers and other flora rendered in monochromatic silhouette. With these quick, gestural studies Gambier captures the essence of her subject in its natural environment. This body of work aims to reveal the bold power of life in its physical form. While these studies have been ongoing for years, Gambier’s connection to nature has deepened since she moved her home and studio from Brooklyn to rural upstate New York. Most mornings she paints in a flower garden when the sun still allows the plant to open. This spring and summer ritual allows Gambier to connect with the earth and celebrate the plant. She typically observes and paints the flower from a vantage point that mimics its natural height, making their presence equivalent and allowing her to properly acknowledge its singularity and dignity. Working horizontally and on the ground, Gambier uses a rigorous and bold brushstroke to translate the shape of each flower. Although an individual painting is often completed with a few gestures, repetition is a key part of Gambier’s process. She will move from paper to paper until a single image, or a series of images, captures the essence of her subject. This is why Gambier often displays her works in series of multiples, diptychs, triptychs, and quadriptychs. To some, the directness of her mark and absence of color may seem violent and contradictory when imagining the delicacy of flower petals. Yet this intentional gesture is meant to honor the force within the plant—a flower that braves the elements and human pollution each day.
