Frederick Hart
HEROIC SPIRIT Signed Lithograph, 1992 Olympics, Nude Figures, Motivational Art

1992

About the Item

HEROIC SPIRIT is a hand drawn limited edition lithograph after the sketch by Frederick Hart for his sculpture entitled "Heroic Spirit" created for the 1992 Atlanta Summer Olympics. HEROIC SPIRIT was printed using hand lithography on archival Arches printmaking paper 100% acid free. This very special limited edition lithograph is a tribute to the Olympic Spirit - whose guiding principle/motto is the hendiatris Citius, Altius, Fortius, which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger". It was proposed by Pierre de Coubertin upon the creation of the International Olympic Committee in 1894. ... Coubertin said " These three words represent a programme of moral beauty. Heroic Spirit, printed in shades of Khaki green gray, black and white, depicts four classic male and female nude figures reaching skyward, expressively drawn in graphite and white pencil, their lifelike human forms achieving the artists intention of Olympian ideals. Print size - 31 x 23.5 inches, unframed, excellent condition, pencil signed by Frederic Hart Edition size - 550, plus proofs Year published - 1992 Printer - JK Fine Art Editions Co., NY Frederick Hart, American sculptor was born in Atlanta Georgia in 1943, died 1999, best known for his public monuments and work in Bronze and Acrylic. Hart is renowned for his Creation Sculpture at the Washington Cathedral in Washington DC and The Three Soldiers located at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1984, which is one of the most visited monuments in Washington DC. In 1988 he was the recipient of the quadrennial Presidential Design Excellence Award (Vietnam Memorial work). Both the Vietnam sculpture and his Cathedral work are reflections of a humanist vision of art. Hart has used his celebrity to denounce the decline of moral and aesthetic standards in contemporary art, and to set forth his alternative vision for a "great rebirth of art." That rebirth must begin, Hart says, by rediscovering and renewing the "discarded axioms" and forgotten standards of past art - such as that "ancient trinity of truth, beauty, and goodness," and the idea of art as "service to values and ideals it holds in greater esteem than art itself." Artist statement: “I believe that art has a moral responsibility, that it must pursue something higher than itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist in the domain of the common man. It must be an enriching, ennobling, and vital partner in the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a majestic presence in everyday life just as it was in the past.”

Two Nudes Posing With Armchair is an original hand drawn stone lithograph attributed to the American Pop artist Mel Ramos, printed at Bank Street Atelier NYC circa 1970 using black, olive, tan and orange inks on Buff color ARCHES paper 100% acid free. Two Nudes Posing With Armchair is an unusual, almost surreal composition depicting two nude young women; one seated with knees bent, sitting sideways on top of a tan and orange print armchair; the other woman is scooched down underneath the chair. Two mysterious stiletto heel shoes are visible - one below the chair and one above in the seated woman's hands adding to the intrigue of this interior setting. Bank Street Atelier became one of the premier lithography print studios in NYC at that time and became a major graphic center, which attracted many of the Modern American Masters of the 1970’s, including Alexander Calder, Willem deKooning, Red Grooms, Al Hirschfeld, Ellsworth Kelly, Romare Bearden, Fairfield Porter, Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Alex Katz and many more. The resulting prints were produced with the highest quality and earned a reputation in the art world for professionalism and excellence in lithographic printmaking. About the artist - Mel Ramos(1935 - 2018, California) Mel Ramos is an American Pop artist best known for his female nudes painted alongside brand logos. The artist’s coupling of women with familiar products like martini glasses and bananas serves as a commentary on the ways in which capitalism has employed the female body. “I make sure that my pictures are not too erotic and that they always have a trace of humor,” he said of his work. “I make sure they are ‘in good taste.’ Either you understand it or not.” Born on July 24, 1935 in Sacramento, CA, Ramos like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, found inspiration through the comic books Wonder Woman and Superman growing up and later pinup posters...

    By Eric Fischl

TWO GIRLS DANCING Year: 2011 Medium: 2-color lithograph Size: 27 x 30 inches (69 x 76 cm) Edition: 100 Price: $1,900 Born in New York City in 1948, Eric Fischl grew up in the suburbs of Long Island , his parents having moved there shortly before his second year.”Safer place to raise a family”, they used to say. Against a backdrop of alcoholism and a country club culture obsessed with image over content, Fischl became focused on the rift between what was experienced and what could not be said. Until the late 70’s, suburbia was not considered a legitimate genre for art. With his first New York show at the Edward Thorp Gallery, epithets like “psycho-sexual suburban dramas” became velcroed to his disturbing images of dyfunctional family life. Fischl began his art education in Phoenix, Arizona where his parents had moved in 1967. First at Phoenix Junior College, then a year at Arizona State University, and finally getting his BFA in 1972 at the recently opened California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. After graduation he moved to Chicago where he worked as a guard at the Museum of Contemporary Art. It was in Chicago that Fischl was exposed to the non-mainstream art of the Hairy Who. “The underbelly, carnie world of Ed Paschke and the hilarious sexual vulgarity of Jim Nutt...
