About the Item

Georg Gelbke, Untitled (Women Bathing), etching, 1920. Signed and dated in pencil. Initialed and dated in the plate, lower right. A fine, richly-inked impression, in warm black ink, on heavy, cream-wove paper, with margins (1 1/4 to 1 5/8 inches), in good condition. Archivally matted to museum standards, unframed. Image size 6 9/16 x 7 3/4 inches (167 x 197 mm); sheet size 9 1/4 x 11 inches (235 x 279 mm). Georg Gelbke (1882-1947) studied at the Art Academy in Dresden. Much of his life's work was lost in the bombing of Dresden in 1945 when his studio was destroyed. His graphic works are included in the German Expressionist collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The artist exhibited in the 1928 Amsterdam and 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
