About the Item

Paul Jones. (1921-1997) Flora Superba. London, 1971. Edition of 406. Flora Magnifica. London, 1976. Edition of 506. Lithographs. The portraits of flowers by Paul Jones are quite impressive with dramatic backgrounds and life-sized images. A great 20th Century modern artist, Jones deservedly had quite the success during his lifetime. His paintings are widely held in museum collections including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. An Australian, Jones found a world-wide audience for his Flora Superba and Flora Magnifica works. The esteemed British botanist, Wilfred Blunt, has written an engaging text to accompany each flower. An author of great renown, Blunt has critiqued many works on 17th – 19th Century botany. It is the greatest honor to have him contribute to these 20th works by Paul Jones and is a testament to their value both artistically and academically. Even the paper used by Jones, made at Turkey Mill in Kent, is of the highest quality. His pigments are rich and deep speaking to an eye with astute color sense. The works by Paul Jones are sure to have a lasting impression.

Highly regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe, Naumann has often been referred to as the ‘Father of Ornithology”. His presentation shows the birds in their natural settings. Naumann employed renowned bird artists of his time such as. Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering. The resulting tome included over 400 plates. So popular was this work that it enjoyed a second printing less than 20 years later. Its relevancy was undisputed. Naturgeschicte der Land- Und Wasser- Vogel Des Nordlichen Deutschlands un Angranaender Lander, Naumann the elder’s work, was first published in 1795-1817. Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas, or Natural History of Central European Birds, was and published in various formats between 1797 and 1817. Buchanan and Fisher describe this later second edition as the ". . . most scholarly and complete ornithological text book of its time (perhaps of any time)." Reference: Fine Bird Books (1700-1900). FLORA’S FEAST A Masque of Flowers Walter Crane, Illustrator Cassell & Co., Publisher Color Lithograph London, 1889 Born in Liverpool, 15 August 1845, Walter Crane first studied art in his father Thomas’ studio. After both moving to London and losing his father, Crane obtained an apprenticeship as William Linton’s engraving shop. This position exposed the young Crane to political reform which would become a major influence on his future work. As in illustrator, Crane became part of an influential group of political and religious radical movements. A supporter of the Liberal Party, Crane was outspoken in his support of the Communard’s attempt to overthrow the French government in 1871. It is seemingly ironic that at this time that Crane’s reputation as an illustrator of children’s books began to blossom. Within a decade Crane would join his life-long friend William Morris’s Arts and Crafts...
