About the Item

Artist: Norman Rockwell, American (1894 - 1978) Title: The Four Seasons: SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN, WINTER Medium: Hand Drawn Lithograph on Arches paper, 100% acid free Edition size: 200 THE FOUR SEASONS by the American artist illustrator NORMAN ROCKWELL, is a set of four hand drawn lithographs printed using hand lithography techniques on Velin d'Arches paper. The lithographs are UNSIGNED trial proofs bearing the printer's registration cross markings in print margins, from the master printers private collection. These 4 examples were taken to Stockbridge, Mass. and shown to Norman Rockwell for his approval prior to editioning. This suite is was published in an edition size of 200 prints by Circle Gallery, Chicago. Hand Proofed and printed at the American Atelier, New York, NY, Dec. 1974. Very fine impressions, exquisitely detailed drawings printed in a light pencil-gray colored ink on archival Arches printmaking paper, 100% acid free. SPRING portrays two old men and a beagle curiously examining a woman's clothing left on a NO SWIMMING sign. SUMMER shows the two old men and dog fishing on a pier. AUTUMN shows them square dancing in a hoe down. WINTER depicts them making music together. Brown and Bigelow commissioned Rockwell to produce numerous four season calendars. These 4 images were used for the 1953 calendar, all depicting typical seasonal scenes that attempted to capture the essence of the season. It aimed “to convey something of feeling of the seasons by the poses.” The variety of poses used for the old men and dog allowed Rockwell to achieve specific moods. –Norman Rockwell from Rockwell on Rockwell Norman Percevel Rockwell (February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978) was an American illustrator and painter of the 20th-century. His works are famous for their portrayal of American culture. Rockwell is prominent for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenes he created for the magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, for more than four decades. Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed. —Norman Rockwell Paper Size: 20.5 x 19.25 inches, hand torn edges, unframed, unsigned Trial Proofs from the master printers private collection Images: 13 x 13 inch format

  • Buffalo Bill 1899 Original Battle of San Juan Hill 1 sheet of a 24 sheet poster
    Located in Southampton, NY
This rare original lithograph print is from 1899. It is one sheet of a huge 24 sheet poster that was created in 1899 to announce Buffalo Bills Wild West. The size of the complete 24 sheet poster would have been approx. 10 feet tall by 20 feet wide and would have been posted on barns and buildings in 1899 to promote Buffalo Bills Wild West before it would come to towns. This 1 sheet of the 24 sheet lithograph is in such good condition because it was found in the Lithographers draws of the print shop that created the poster. It is black and white because it was a proof that was used to create the final layout of the color poster. It indicates on the image that it is No. 2 Buffalo Bill San Juan Hill 1899, so it would have been the 2nd poster down on the left side of the large total image comprised of 24 separate sheets all unique to create the full image. You can see the two black printed lines on the left side indicate where the edge of the poster would have been. We have never seen a complete image of this rare 1899 poster. When we first acquired this rare proof over 20 years ago, we contacted the The Ringling Museum in Florida that houses a large Buffalo Bill poster...
