About the Item
Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going to?, Cardboard print on paper, 1/10, 2005, 630 x 450mm (print dimensions), 740 x 540mm (paper dimensions)
Born in Windhoek, Andrew van Wyk’s work is strongly influenced by the Damara, Nama, and Baster cultures in Namibia. Although he uses a wide range of techniques, he is considered one of the country’s pioneer cardboard printmakers, and storytelling weaves a strong theme through all his work. Melding the realms of fantasy and reality, Van Wyk addresses a broad range of social and political themes. He was the founding Artist Director of the Rehoboth School of arts from 1998-2014. Namibian arts journalist Martha Mukaiwa describes his work as "Ever detailed, mind-bending and seemingly lifted from the complexity of consideration". Van Wyk has exhibited extensively in Namibia and abroad.
