About the Item
Bernard Buffet, once said to be Picasso’s successor, declined in popularity as French art pundits interest shifted away from figurative art. Twenty years after the artist’s death, Buffet’s work is undergoing a well-deserved resurgence as support for bold, graphic style is at an all-time high.
Buffet, known for his emaciated figures and crude still-lives, dedicated much time and effort documenting France in a cubist style, utilizing thick black strokes with off-sets of meager greens and blues. His propensity to focus on elongated structural integrity and a bleak color palette, rather than the colorful grandeur of other Paris artworks, can be attributed to his formative years in Paris living under Nazi occupation.
Printed on 100% rag arches, non-acid paper, this work is an original lithograph printed from the lithographic plate, drawn by the artist, and printed in a famous atelier in 1960’s Paris.

Bernard Buffet
Bernard Buffet was born on July 10, 1928, in Paris. He was a French painter of Expressionism and a member of the anti-abstract art group L'homme Témoin. He studied art at the École Nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and worked in the studio of the painter Eugène Narbonne. Buffet died on October 4, 1999, in Tourtour, France.
