About the Item
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY
"Sophisticated Lady", a lithograph, is an exemplary work indicative of DuBuffet's early work and style. It is a playful and ironic critique of sophistication and femininity. This original lithograph was initialed in plate 21 for the book "Matière et Mémoire", a work that references and critiques Henri Bergson's work of the same name, in collaboration with the poet Francis Ponge. It was proofed by Jean Dubuffet with his initials and 'épreuve and l'artiste' in pencil. The work is signed with Jean Dubuffet's full signature in pencil at the bottom. The lithograph is 12 x 9.5 inches. This work has been professionally reframed in museum glass.
Jean Dubuffet was born in 1901 in Le Havre, France. One of the most influential artists in the 20th century, his works emphasize the roughness and authenticity of the outsider in image-making and using unorthodox materials and the illusion of perspective. He studied painting at the Academie Julian in 1918, befriending fellow artists Juan Gris, Andre Masson, and Fernand Leger. He dropped out six months later and started on a journey of self-study that would inform his art for the rest of his life. He began to make a name for himself in 1946 when the art critic Clement Greenberg took note of and praised his work, beginning a prolific career for Dubuffet in America thanks to the success of the Pierre Matisse exhibition. Influenced by "Artistry of the Mentally Ill", Dubuffet coined the term "Art Brut" to describe outsider norm that was outside social norms and artistic conventions, using what the non-professional people of the fringes could use to express themselves.
Dubuffet died in 1985 from emphysema. He has been exhibited at the Galerie Rene Drouin in Paris, the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Arthur Tooth and Sons in London, the Hanover Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art, the Robert Fraser Gallery in London and the MuCEM in Marseille. In June 2019, Christie's set an auction record for the artist's work Cérémonie when it sold for $11.1 million

This woman from the 1970s at the height of the Feminist movement is an Amazon. Though you cannot see her body her powerful and determined gaze is that of an individual who knows where she is going and what she wants. Best if you get out of her way. Nonetheless, the aura she creates is hypnotizing and the viewer must struggle to break the spell or be absorbed into her presence. This spell-binding piece of Linder’s is unique in its ability to exude a physical push and pull upon its audience. Richard Linder...Category
