After Nicholas Poussin Seven Sacraments Prints 18th century mezzotint paper

1750s

About the Item

This group of 7 prints (mezzotint on paper, 59 x 75 cm) represents the Seven Sacraments (Baptism, Ordination, Confirmation, Penance, Eucharist, Marriage, Extreme Unction). At the top of every sheet there is the title inside a cartouche, while at the bottom there is written "N. Poussin in." (or "Poussin pinxit") and “George Kilian sculps et excud Aug. Vind”. The group derivates from the series by the French artist Nicholas Poussin, painted between 1637 and 1640 and commissioned by the Italian collector and traveller Cassiano del Pozzo. After this first one, Nicholas Poussin painted a second version of the series for the French collector Paul Fréart de Chantelou from 1644 to 1648. On close examination, this set appears to be a copy, in reverse, of that first set, done 100 years later, by different engravers/publishers. They are made with the mezzotint, a printmaking process of the intaglio family, using a dry point method. It was the first tonal method to be used, enabling half-tones to be produced without using line- or dot-based techniques like hatching, cross-hatching or stipple. Mezzotint achieves tonality by roughening a metal plate with thousands of little dots made by a metal tool with small teeth, called a "rocker". In printing, the tiny pits in the plate retain the ink when the face of the plate is wiped clean. This technique can achieve a high level of quality and richness in the print. As reported in the description, the mezzotint process belongs to two German characters working in the half of the 18th century: the engraver and mezzotinter George Kilian and the printmaker August Vindel.
