PHOENIX BIRD is a rarely seen fine art lithograph portrait print by the renowned American Pop artist, Peter Max. PHOENIX BIRD was printed using color offset lithography techniques on heavyweight paper, artist's logo trademark printed on lower image. PHOENIX BIRD is an ethereal fantasy portrait portraying the profile of a beautiful woman and splendid mythical bird perched atop her head expressed as a black line drawing with color accents of light red, yellow, and blue. The phoenix bird is one of the most famous and ancient symbols in the world. The phoenix bird is one of the oldest symbols in human history. The first references to the bird date back over 3,000 years BC. In ancient China, the phoenix was a symbol of immortality. The phoenix is a legendary bird mentioned in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology who dies and is reborn from flames. As well as classical mythology, several similar species exist throughout folklore around the world. It’s associated with the sun and rebirth and is therefore an important symbol of the circle of life and regeneration. Print size - 28.5 x 22.5 inches, unframed, good condition, artist's copyright and printed logo appears on right lower image, Year published - 1981 Artist Peter Max was born in 1937, Berlin Germany and spent his childhood in Shanghai. From China, the family went to Tibet for a year, and then on to Israel. Peter Max's family's odyssey continued to Paris, and finally, at the age of 16, Max arrived in the United States. Peter Max began his art studies in New York at the Art Student's League and continued at the Pratt Institute and School of Visual Arts. Peter Max, who is known throughout the world and is a household name in America, is famous for his new age style, cosmic imagery and multi-colored blends. During the late 1960's and early 70's, Peter Max's colorful art reached millions of people and he won numerous major awards for his work. Peter Max's paintings, drawings, sculpture and limited edition graphics have been exhibited in major museums throughout the world.

MULTI PERSONAGE is a lively abstract color collage portrait expressed in vibrant shades of red, blue, pink, green, purple, yellow with hints of multi color pastel tones and white creating an abstracted body and face. Bold black paint strokes define the face with its zany black eyes, head, body and limbs; collage effect torn paper bits fill in the body form. MULTI PERSONAGE is a very unique, fantastically playful and wild composition by Karel Appel, one of the founders of the avant-garde art movement CoBrA active during the late 1940's thru early 1950's. His paintings are known for incorporating applications of vibrant, violent colors often possessing a primal, childlike quality. Karel Appel, (born April 25, 1921, Amsterdam, Netherlands—died May 3, 2006, Zürich, Switzerland), Dutch painter of turbulent, colorful, and semi-abstract compositions, who was a co-founder (1948) of the CoBRA group of northern European Expressionists. He was also a noted sculptor and graphic artist. Appel attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Amsterdam (1940–43), and helped found the “Reflex” group, which became known as CoBRA (for Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), in 1948. He moved to Paris in 1950 and by the 1960s had settled in New York City; he later lived in Italy and Switzerland.
