About the Item

"BSG," is a digital illustration by DC based artist Samantha Viotty. This piece shows an unapologetic stance of power from the who female figures. Viotty explores the themes of Black culture and what that means to her. Her work constantly recreates found images digitally and frames them into a layered discussion of intersectionality. Without the context of facial features the portrait allows for the viewer to place their own identity on the piece. Her works while relate to all women they act as a vessel for her exploration into her own black female identify. Her works while typically relate to all women they act as a vessel for her exploration into her own black female identify. Artist Statment: My artwork lives in a space that examines identity and social issues as they pertain to memory, history and popular culture. Death and loss have been an incredibly impactful aspect of my life and have formed my perspective on life. My work plays off of reproductions or recreations of already existing works and norms, challenging them and attempting to reimagine them from a different lens. I create digital illustrations as a way to re-envision the way I see the world. My work is a reflection of my identity as a Black Woman, highlighting people of color and using found images to reimagine representation. My process starts with an image that already exists that I feel connected to proceeded by layering, mixing, and digital collaging. I use color and block images to convey the messages within the portraits. The subjects of my work often do not have detailed faces. I invite the viewer to use their imagination by using the details in the setting, colors, and backgrounds to derive meaning. My work thus far has focused on aspects of intersectionality, particularly of race and gender, my black woman identity in the United States of America. My work aims to create a wide range of opportunities to view people of color (black men and women), to challenge the monolithic notions and stereotypes that society, popular culture, and the media have created.
