Gyals BW- Contemporary Digital Illustration of Three Women (Black+White) (1/20)

2019

About the Item

“Gyals BW,” created by Washington DC-based emerging artist Samantha Viotty, is the digital illustration of a found image. This image goes in conjunction with the full-colored piece "Gyals." This piece is one of the only by Viotty that includes facial features, giving some identity back to the figures in her collage. Her work constantly recreates found images digitally and frames them into a layered discussion of intersectionality. Without the context of facial features, the portrait allows the viewer to place their own identity on the piece. From the artist, "My artwork lives in a space that examines identity and social issues as they pertain to memory, history and popular culture. Death and loss have been incredibly impactful aspects of my life and have formed my perspective on life. My work plays off of reproductions or recreations of already existing works and norms, challenging them and attempting to reimagine them from a different lens. I create digital illustrations as a way to re-envision the way I see the world. My work reflects my identity as a Black Woman, highlighting people of color and using found images to reimagine representation. My process starts with an image that already exists that I feel connected to proceeded by layering, mixing, and digital collaging. I use color and block images to convey the messages within the portraits. The subjects of my work often do not have detailed faces. Instead, I invite the viewer to use their imagination by using the details in the setting, colors, and backgrounds to derive meaning. My work thus far has focused on aspects of intersectionality, particularly of race and gender, my black woman identity in the United States of America. My work aims to create a wide range of opportunities to view people of color (black men and women), to challenge the monolithic notions and stereotypes that society, popular culture, and the media have created."
