About the Item

RUDOLF GOETHE HERMAN DENGENKOLB, REINHARD MERTENS Aepfel und Birnen Walter Muller, Illustrator Berlin, 1849 Chromolithograph Fascination with fruits, vegetables and spices was a driving force behind many of the great explorations to new and exotic worlds. Man has always been intrigued with new foods. The variety of cooking styles, due both to climate and availability of ingredients, has influenced many aspects of life. Germany, with its harsher climate, found less bounty in its growth of edible fruits. However, great arbors were gently cared for, coaxing their sweet fruits to maturation. In keeping with a proud heritage, we find in Aepfel und Birnen the vast array of apples and pears grown in the countryside. The introduction of different fruits, vegetables and spices has made a marked change in diet, health, fragrance and architecture. Infusing information on horticulture into the mainstream, books such as “Conversations on Natural History” brought techniques for gardening and harvesting the “exotiques”. Goethe chronicles a variety of delicious apples and pears to be used in everyday life. Although there is no new horticultural information disclosed, this work is nonetheless important for it accurate drawings, in full color, giving descriptions of their various qualities. Marketplaces were now filled with exciting shapes and smells and this hefty volume would be the perfect guide to understanding and enjoying the best of autumn's bounty.
