Ryoshu Yamaguchi
A Set of 6 Woodblock Prints by Ryoshu Yamaguchi with an Explanation Hardcover

1954

About the Item

Noh Play is a traditional form of Japanese theater that combines elements of drama, dance, music, and poetry. It has been performed for over 600 years and continues to be an important part of Japanese cultural heritage, often regarded as the highest classic art in Japan. Born in Kyoto in 1889, Ryoshu Yamaguchi learned to become a Noh performer from his father and the Okura school. From a young age, he demonstrated an inclination for painting and honed his skills under the tutelage of the renowned historical painter, Mr. Taniguchi, ultimately achieving great success in this realm. His paintings were often selected in art contests. This series of six original woodblock prints and his book was printed in 1954 in Kyoto, Japan, by the renowned Mr. Kiyoomi Shinagawa, Director of Kyoto Hanga-in. They are in perfect condition, featuring six actors' portrayals on a gold-painted background. Each is signed in the woodcut and bears the artist’s seal. The artist was able, in this series, to convey the beauty of the Noh performers, showcasing elegance simplified to its utmost degree, grandeur, and the subtle impression of underlying drama. The pieces bear myths, and legends, representing historical events and a whole symbolism anchored in traditional Japanese culture. The artist's evident technique can be appreciated individually in each piece, an amazingly crafted work of art, with attention to detail such as an extensive range of colors, lines, and balance that creates a sense of deliberate movement, poetry, and hyper-elegance for each character. These pieces can also be enjoyed as part of a larger series, with the original book serving as a guide to understanding the six figures in a Noh Play. For those fortunate enough to have experienced Japanese culture, this series is a great example of mid-twentieth-century Japanese printmaking, embodying the essence of Wabi-sabi perfectly. This term is often translated in modern Japanese as "elegance" and "refinement."

  • "La Vache Enragee" iconic vintage poster by Toulouse-Lautrec
    By Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
    Located in Hinsdale, IL
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE (1864-1901) "LA VACHE ENRAGÉE" Wittrock P27B, Adhemar 197 Original color lithograph Wittrock’s State III of III with letters Printed on buff wove paper, c. 1896 Bears artist stamp “TL” upper right, dated 96 Image size: 22 1/2” x 23 5/8” Several examples are known where Lautrec drew on work by other artists whom he admired. In this poster there are clear references to Adolphe Willette's humorous themes and rococo style of illustration. Willette was the founder and illustrator of the short-lived monthly “La Vache Enragee”(the angry cow) edited by the cartoonist Adolphe Roedel. This colored poster of the same title was commissioned for the appearance of the magazine March 1896. As a reference to the wretched financial state of most artists, the term “manger de la vache enrage” (meaning roughly, “meaning not having enough to eat”) was adopted as the motto for the “Vachalcade”which was held on Montmarte annually from 1896. This was an artists' procession, with fanfares and allegories on fame and the muses; it also included a furious cow and a troupe of pretty girls as a satire on Europa with the bull. The event was organized by Roedel"(Adriani p.217) Toulouse-Lautrec took up lithography at a high point in its history, when technical advances in color printing and new possibilities for large scale led to a proliferation of posters as well as prints for the new bourgeois collector. In his short career, he created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs...
