About the Item

Sean Scully Catalogue produced on the occasion of the artist's exhibition at Pinacoteca, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2015 Signed SIGNED, NEW Exhibition Catalogue: "Sean Scully 1974-2015," Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo, 2015 Texts: Ivo Mesquita, Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, Interview: Sean Scully, Philip Dodd. Portugese/English; 192 pages; 10 1/4 x 8 1/4 x 3/4 inches APR 11, 2015 JUN 28, 2015 In April, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the art museum of São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture, presents the exhibit: Sean Scully: 1974–2015, opening on April 11. Sponsored by Credit Suisse, Oi, and Iguatemi São Paulo, with cultural support of Oi Futuro, this is the first major retrospective in Brazil of this celebrated Irish artist. Scully’s works have rarely been seen in Brazil. In 2002 at the Rio de Janeiro Biennial and at Centro de Arte Hélio Oiticica, and now at the Pinacoteca, visitors can appreciate an overview of his creation in 46 works produced from 1974 to 2014, a large sampling that allows spectators to observe the variations in his creative process. Sean Scully was born in Ireland in 1945, he was raised in London, and has lived in the United States since 1975, where he became a naturalized citizen. He is the most important abstract painter of his generation. His work is internationally acclaimed and is part of some of the world’s foremost collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City; Guggenheim Museum, New York City; Tate, London; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain; and Institut Valencià d’Art Modern, Valencia, Spain. Sean Scully’s paintings are abstract, composed of precise geometric shapes, with clear and demarcated lines. There are paintings with protruding blocks with a difference in thickness. He uses a variety of color palettes, ranging from shades of black and rich variations of brown and red, to vibrant colors like blue-pink and canary yellow. In this exhibit, one can also see watercolors and pastels lesser known to the general public. Some of his paintings are very striking for their size, such as Darkness Here, 1989. Also on view in this exhibit is his largest painting, measuring 4 meters, and helped Sean become better known starting in the 1990s. Curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti, the exhibit will occupy the first floor of the Pinacoteca from April 11 to June 28, 2015.

TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE (1864-1901) "LA VACHE ENRAGÉE" Wittrock P27B, Adhemar 197 Original color lithograph Wittrock’s State III of III with letters Printed on buff wove paper, c. 1896 Bears artist stamp “TL” upper right, dated 96 Image size: 22 1/2” x 23 5/8” Several examples are known where Lautrec drew on work by other artists whom he admired. In this poster there are clear references to Adolphe Willette's humorous themes and rococo style of illustration. Willette was the founder and illustrator of the short-lived monthly “La Vache Enragee”(the angry cow) edited by the cartoonist Adolphe Roedel. This colored poster of the same title was commissioned for the appearance of the magazine March 1896. As a reference to the wretched financial state of most artists, the term “manger de la vache enrage” (meaning roughly, “meaning not having enough to eat”) was adopted as the motto for the “Vachalcade”which was held on Montmarte annually from 1896. This was an artists' procession, with fanfares and allegories on fame and the muses; it also included a furious cow and a troupe of pretty girls as a satire on Europa with the bull. The event was organized by Roedel"(Adriani p.217) Toulouse-Lautrec took up lithography at a high point in its history, when technical advances in color printing and new possibilities for large scale led to a proliferation of posters as well as prints for the new bourgeois collector. In his short career, he created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs...
