Holding Hands Yellow

2020

About the Item

Holding Hands Yellow 2020 50 x 50 cm Lithographic print in colour on 140 gsm smooth woven paper. From the edition of 108,000 was issued in the Hackney Today newspaper in 2020 as a special thank you to the residents of Hackney. The print is in excellent condition overall. Has fold lines from when issued folded in newspaper. It may have slight handling marks if any are present at all. Print is accompanied with the Hackney Today newspaper and a Certificate of Authenticity issued from the gallery. British street artist Stik began painting his signature stick figures on the streets of east London in the early 2000s. The spare designs, which the artist partially based on Japanese kanji, appeared in doorways and on the sides of buildings while the artist was living in homeless shelters and social housing. In the years since Stik’s artmaking has expanded beyond his native London streets and into gallery spaces across the city. Works from his studio practise—which includes painting, sculpture, and editioned prints—have fetched six-figure prices on the secondary market. Though his signature iconography is minimalist in execution, Stik maintains a commitment to social justice both inside and outside his studio. His 2014 mural Little Big Mother calls attention to the need for social housing, while proceeds from an auction for Holding Hands (Maquette) (2020) helped fund an outdoor sculpture programme in Hackney.

Copper Banksy vs Bristol Museum, Contemporary Art Show Poster. Unsigned show poster form Banksy's exhibit in Bristol in 2006. Banksy’s career—filled with art world pranks and political activism—has produced a variety of posters showcasing the street artist’s wry sense of humor. Commissioned by Greenpeace to protest global deforestation, Banksy’s early poster Save or Delete (2002) features blindfolded characters from Disney’s The Jungle Book standing amidst a devastated landscape. In 2005, Banksy pranked The Museum of Modern Art by secretly installing a painting of a Tesco Value soup can (a spoof on Andy Warhol’s famous silkscreens of Campbell’s Soup Cans) in one of its galleries—a hoax that went unnoticed by the museum’s staff for six days and inspired a series of Tesco Value soup can posters years later.
