Ancient Woodland, North Norfolk, Mandala and Collage of Woodland Nature

2020

About the Item

Ancient Woodland All the elements used were collected from the first walk with my Mum and stepdad between lockdowns. All from a small woodland in North Norfolk. Ancient Woodland, 2020 Series: Detritus Archival Pigment Print, Mounted on Dibond in custom made Frame; with Black Stained Oak and antireflective UV protective museum standard Art Glass Print 60 x 60 cm / Framed: 62 x 62 cm/ 24.5 x 24.5 inches approx. Edition of 8 + 2AP About the project: "Detritus' series was born from the twin frustrations of lockdown halting all planned projects, yet litter still somehow being dropped in abundance on my street. With no idea of the final output, or indeed the hygiene implications, I started to collect, scan, and record what I found. When I realised these colourful misshapen objects could be turned into something beautiful, the frustrations left me and I began looking for other sources of Detritus. These collages gave me purpose during the pandemic and allowed me to grow something beautiful from a place of frustration. My aim is to simply give viewers of the work a fleeting moment of calm. Unable to shoot anything, I’ve been making collections of things I find on the ground and scanning them to create composite images of otherwise ignored or discarded objects." - George McLeod About the Artist George McLeod is a London-based fine art and fashion photographer. After building a darkroom in his dad’s attic when he was 16, he went on to study photography at Nottingham Trent University, from which he graduated in 2003. For a while after, he strayed from his original focus as he pursued a career in writing music for TV and film – though he continued to shoot fashion editorials in his spare time for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Fendi and Bvlgari, among others. In 2019, after finding inspiration for a fine art photography project, he decided to further dedicate himself to the medium. He is currently developing a practice in which he can combine his love for photography with his passion for short story writing and music. His love for painting has a major influence on his work, as does his lifelong fascination with science. McLeod has been the recipient of numerous photographic awards and his work has been acquired by various private estates and art collection. • Prints come framed and ready to hang. • ATO>MIC #8, unique warmed toned, Silver Gelatin Abstract Luminogram Print
    Located in London, GB
ATO>MIC #8, 2020 Unique Gelatin Silver Print/ Luminogram and Photogram technique, Printed on tea infused fibre based paper, Framed: Custom made frame with antireflective UV protective art glass 23 x 18 cm approx. image size 38 x 35.5 cm (Framed) Unique Series: ATO>MIC Signed on verso Provided with the Certificate of Authenticity “The ATO>MIC work started as an attempt to replicate the idea behind still life painting - where you are trying to reproduce the image of solid looking things, things that could be on a shelf. So, I wanted to try doing that with just using light instead of paints - however I soon started to see the similarities with Harold Edgerton’s famous atomic explosion photos and how the scale of my work could be switched between small items on a shelf to enormous atomic explosions. That is the reason behind the strange title ATO>MIC - where the “>” is a kind of link between larger and smaller scales, between the two influencing ideas.” – Mike Jackson The images may be reminiscent of the first milliseconds of atomic bomb explosions captured by Harold Edgerton's Rapatronic camera in the early 1950s but also visualise the thought of Maholy-Nagy’s bold visions in the Bauhaus’s movement toward the idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or “total work of art.” The 3D concepts that were first expanded in the same art movement by El Lissitzky a hundred years ago, are also explored here by Jackson’s drowned thin line within the third of the image. In his vision, the line reflects a shelf with the object on top, by adding the weight to it, the gravity pushing them down. Or maybe the thin line is just the horizon, where the enormous atomic blast took place…? Beyond these flat forms of two dimensional ‘lumino-graphic’ works on paper, the purest form of photography (‘light drawing’) lays a visible path to three-dimensional imaginary world, realised in precise composition, rhythm and warm earthy tones of these works. It’s up to the viewer to decide what they prefer to see and take with them. As Wassily Kandinsky once said; “Imagination is what allows your mind to discover.” About the Artist: Michael G Jackson...

The subjects for his striking and captivating visuals are typically set in the most ordinary environments, drawing the viewer into a charged but serene experience based on composition, palette and formal lines. Saturated in color, the nominal subjects gather a haunting and mesmerizing quality, creating a poignant pretext for the making of a formal color photograph. Decisively capturing the traces left by humanity, Pawassar's images are filled with a sense of universal nostalgia and pay homage to the passage of time and the extinguished moment, referencing documentary and street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastian Salgado...
