About the Item

An authorized, signed collotype in colors on Arches wove paper after French artist Georges Braque (1882-1963) titled "Theière et Fruits" (Teapot and Fruit), c. 1950. Signed in plate and hand pencil signed and numbered by Braque: 56/150 with the publisher's blindstamp. Published by Guy Spitzer, Paris. Framed size: 28.5" x 39". Image size: 13.5" x 25.5". Very good condition. Authenticated by Swann Auction Galleries, New York City. Provenance: Dr. Max Frank Baer, who was associated with B'nai B'rith for 65 years -- 43 of them in staff and leadership positions -- died on Monday at his home in Washington. He was 81. He retired in 1977 as the international director of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization, which he had run since 1948. As head of the international youth organization, he was credited with bringing in professional social workers as field directors and building the group into the world's largest Jewish youth movement. He developed leadership programs, including a Summer Institute, as the organization expanded to Israel and other nations. In the late 1930's, he helped thousands of refugees from Austria and Czechoslovakia to resettle in this country. After World War II, he initiated a national survey to expose and end the quota systems that barred returning Jewish G.I.'s from colleges and universities of their choice. Collotype is a dichromate-based photographic process invented by Alphonse Poitevin in 1856 and used for large volume mechanical printing before the existence of cheaper offset lithography. Georges Braque (13 May 1882 – 31 August 1963) was a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor. His most important contributions to the history of art were in his alliance with Fauvism from 1906, and the role he played in the development of Cubism. Braque’s work between 1908 and 1912 is closely associated with that of his colleague Pablo Picasso. Their respective Cubist works were indistinguishable for many years, yet the quiet nature of Braque was partially eclipsed by the fame and notoriety of Picasso. Georges Braque was a 20th century French painter who invented Cubism with Pablo Picasso. Along with Cubism, Braque used the styles of Impressionism, Fauvism and collage, and even staged designs for the Ballet Russes. Through his career, his style changed to portray somber subjects during wartime and lighter, freer themes in between. He never strayed far from Cubism, as there were always aspects of it in his works. Braque died on August 31, 1963, in Paris.
