Kyu-Baik Hwang
The tortoise and the hare

1983

About the Item

The tortoise and the hare. Original color aquatint and etching, 1983. Edition of 150 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Art and Sport portfolio: The Yugoslav Olympic Committee of the Winter Olympic Games Sarajevo 1984 wished to give a certain cultural-artistic accent to this world festivity. The admire of the Olympic idea, those who have a liking for the Olympic winter sports and the art connected with them will be, in agreement with the art publisher Visconti Art Lazo Vujić, honored by creations contributed by world known prominent artist. A portfolio containing sixteen original prints, handsigned and numbered by the artists, is published in a limited edition of 200 originals by each artist. Names like Dorazio, Folon, Greco, Helnwein, Hodgkin, Hwang, Kolar, Moore, Paladino, Pistoletto, Rosenquist, Santomaso, Stupica, Twombly and Warhol guarantee the high quality of the artistic idea and its realization. The size of the original print is 85 x 62 cm. The edition of the original graphic portfolio will be accompanied by limited editions of art posters of the same size, not numbered, but each of them carrying an impression of the inscription “Olympic Games Sarajevo 1984” and its logotype. The themes proposed by the artists are either winter sports, the Olympic idea or the town of Sarajevo. All the artists remain faithful to their own specific expression, using the formal elements of the language developed through the years of their creative presence in world’s art. So every print included in the portfolio is at the same time a particular contribution to the continuity of their artistic orientation, the theme being an additional iconographic impulse to their visual research. The symbiosis of the Olympic idea and art is certainly an interesting creative proposal that will fascinate art-collectors and sport-lovers as well. Kyu-Baik Hwang is contemporary painter and printmaker, from South Korea. He served in the military during the Korean War, and after the war he began to paint. Latter, he traveled across Europe and America and got inspired by many of their cultures and artists. Displacing ordinary objects from their original environments, typical for his works is often compared to Surrealist’s art from the 20th-century. Unlike surrealists, who rejected mind control and try to show the world of the unconscious, Hwang stimulates viewers’ imagination. He presents an extra-ordinary, imaginary world through ordinary spaces and objects, using different methods from printmaking to painting. This depiction represents a well known fable about a turtle and a rabbit’s race, where the much slower turtle defeats the rabbit, thanks to it’s intelligence and perseverance, which should encourage all competitors. There is also a pan in the top of the board, with five interlocking rings – the symbol and logo of the Olympic games, as well as a watch that symbolizes the passing of the time.

  • Smoking Cigarette #1
    By Tom Wesselmann
    Located in Ljubljana, SI
Smoking Cigarette #1. Original color etching and soft-ground etching on Arches watercolor paper, 1991. Edition of 65 signed and numbered impressions on Arches paper. Tom Wesselmann is one of the biggest American pop artists today. Even he did not like being labeled a pop artist, it is hard to imagine that his artworks featuring consumer goods and assorted American icons would be considered anything but pop art. At first he was a follower of abstract expressionism, but later switched to figurative art. In the late ‘50s he produced a series of small format collages, which became the basis for his future nudes and still lifes. In 1963 he married Claire Selley, his most faithful model from the series ‘Great American Nude’, and other nudes. In his search for creative styles he began to produce three-dimensional works with the technique of assemblage, using everyday objects such as telephones and televisions. In the ‘Still Life’ series he used advertising techniques and complemented traditional still lifes with mass consumption items taken directly from ads. In the ‘80s he began to work with metals and produced original works with a special laser. Over the next two decades he returned to large formats and the theme of the nude from the ‘60s, rounding off his career with The ‘Sunset Nude’ series, inspired by the works of Matisse. Tom Wesselmann went down in history as one of the greatest representatives of pop art due to his exciting commercial images, his aggressive intervention in three dimensions, his choice of trivial motifs, their monumentalisation, the use of stereotypes as a basis for his work and the choice of strong colors. Wesselmann’s aesthetic usage of everyday objects was done not in criticism of American consumerism and culture, but as a way to render Classical genres modern so as to explore the gap between art and contemporary life. The ‘Smoker Study’ series of works would become one of the most recurrent themes in the 1970s, which he developed throughout the rest of his artistic life. Characterized by the flattening and simplification of everyday subjects, here a single cigarette releases a precise stream of smoke. This burning cigarette on the first sight looks like just a banal representation of an everyday object, but it is more than this. Even cigarettes were one of the major consumer products, which we could previously often seen in different commercials with handsome men and pretty ladies, it also represents an allusion to the lips as an eroticized object...
