About the Item
Marsden Hartley is a seminal figure in American arts even eighty-plus years after his death. Hartley was a member of Alfred Stieglitz’s groundbreaking circle and painted easel-sized landscapes, portraits, still-lifes, and abstract compositions based on pre-World War I German military paraphernalia and medals.
In addition to his work with Stieglitz, Hartley accumulated an exhaustive knowledge of French avant-garde artwork which informed a dynamic style unlike anything else in twentieth-century American arts. Hartley was an early pioneer of the techniques and aesthetics that would become American modernism.
Hartley was deeply attached to nature, and his solidly-painted forms evoke a primordial geologic power and poetic sense of isolation that transcends observed reality. Exaggerated form, strong outline, and flattened space are among Hartley’s signature strategies, as demonstrated by this still-life lithograph.
