About the Item

Copperplate engraving on laid paper. This plate was created for Description de l'Égypte : ou, Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont été faites en Égypte pendant l'expédition de l'armée française. [Description of Egypt or Series of observation and research done in Egypt during the French expedition], published 1809-1829, Paris. This print is from the 2nd edition published c. 1820 by Charles-Louis Fleury Panckoucke. This monumental work, consisting of 23 volumes in the first edition and 37 volumes in the second with 894 plates made from over 3000 drawings, was commissioned by Napoleon during his Egyptian campaign between 1798 and 1801. Hundreds of artists, scholars, and scientists were hired for this huge project, traveling along with the 35,000 soldiers shipped out by Napoleon to conquer Eygpt. His military campaign was a failure but the historical, archaeological, art-historical, and natural-historical study of this fascinating and rich culture it produced was one of the most ambitious and comprehensive works ever published. The dimensions of the exceptionally large plates even necessitated the creation of a special press with customized furniture to house it.

This gorgeous and subtle still life print by Laurent Schkolnyk, realized in France during the latter half of the 20th Century. The work features an arrangement of objects on a plane, presumably a table. Fabric, appearing to be drapes in a sumptuous copper hue, gathers the right edge of the composition next to a perfume bottle with a bulbous base that tapers to a elegantly attenuated neck in a vibrant lime green hue with stylized foliate detailing in azure. The perfume bottle also offers an umber hued atomizer. Moving from right to left, there is a half circular bowl with an abstracted white...
