Chromolithography of Chamonix the sea of ice and the Montenvers railway - Alpes

Circa 1910

About the Item

Chromolithography Inaugurated in 1910 by the President of the Republic Armand Fallières, this small train that brings visitors from the center of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to the Montenvers site is a true institution. The Montenvers train has been improved as railway technology has evolved. If the original locomotives were steam powered, they are now electric but one thing has never changed: the rack. This gearing, designed to ensure the train's adherence on steep tracks, has remained the most suitable technique for the route! At its creation, the train was made up of open and closed cars, without distinction of class indicated on the cars. Indeed, the most affluent people were seated according to the weather conditions, in the sun or sheltered from the rain! Quickly after its creation, the Montenvers Train became one of the main attractions of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Valley. In the 1990's, it welcomed more than one million passengers per year in high season. Railway - Mountain - Alpes Lévy and Neurdein together Paris
