Yoruba Ibeji triplets master sculptor.Abegunde of Ede tribal African Art Nigeria

circa 1930

About the Item

An extraordinary group of Ibeji "triplets" sculpted by the same master sculptor. Ibeji is name of a very specific type of carved wooden figure from Yoruba in Nigeria. Ibejis represent essentially late (twin or triplet) children, and are treated like actual children. They are carried around, bathed, powdered, given jewellery. Note the trade beads which adorn our figures' waistlines. One of the female figures is also wearing a bracelet. An Ibeji figure was the first authentic tribal object I acquired back in 2002. It's only very recently that I understood why I feel so strongly about these figures: it is the fact that they have been very deeply cared for by their original owners. The sculpture of an Ibeji - headdress, scarifications, shape of eyes - varies from region to region in Yorubaland, and allow the collector to situate the area, or even the town, where the artwork was carved. The three Ibejis presented here come from the town of Ede, where the master carver Abegunde who worked in a very distinctive style. Our figures can be attributed to him or his workshop. One of our triplets has a particularly prestigious provenance: it belonged to the American collector Sanford Griffith, an authority on African Art (even according to the New York Times!). The figure featured in an exhibition of African Tribal Art at the UN Building in New York in 1978. It was subsequently sold by New York tribal art dealer Mark Eglinton in 2005.

  • American Surrealist pipes and playing cards spirit of Magritte abstract Montage
    By Charles Green Shaw
    Located in Norwich, GB
I love this extraordinary American surrealist piece - a collage/montage, an assembly of objects in a velvet-clad box/frame - for a number of reasons reasons. I love the fact that it depicts pipes, among the most iconic images of the surrealist movement, rooted in Magritte’s famous 1929 painting which depicts a pipe accompanied by the caption “Ceci n'est pas une pipe” (This is not a pipe). Marcel Duchamp loved using pipes...

  • "Mossi Head dress Mas ceremonies Rep Upper Volta, " Wood created c. 1910
    Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Mossi Head dress Mas ceremonies Rep Upper Volta" is a wood sculpture that includes various other materials such as fabric, and fibers. An abstracted animal with a hump and a bird on it's back make up the top of the headdress. 27" x 6" x 1" The Mossi states were created about 1500 A.D., when bands of horsemen rode north from what is now northern Ghana into the basin of the Volta River and conquered several less powerful peoples, including Dogon, Lela, Nuna, and Kurumba. These were integrated into a new society call Mossi, with the invaders as chiefs and the conquered as commoners. The Mossi make both political art and spiritual art. Figures are used by the ruling class to validate political power, and masks are used by the conquered peoples to control the forces of nature. The several mask styles reflect the diversity of the population before the 15th century invasion. Long tall masks...
