Catherine Latson
Specimen 20, Framed Sea Nature Inspired Blue Green Hand-dyed Fiber Sculpture

2020

About the Item

Framed in a clear acrylic shadowbox, Catherine Latson's Specimen 20 reads as an artistic rendition of a beautiful sea specimen. Luminous light blue hand-dyed cotton thread is wrapped around tendrils that stretch from a delicate cluster of tiny curls in the center toward light yellow green ends that curve gently outward. 26-inch diameter x 3 inches deep (unframed), 32 x 32 x 4.25 inches (framed in acrylic shadowbox). The Specimen Series is inspired by sea anemones and the motion of a water-bound world, exploring forms that blur the lines between animal and plant, realism and fantasy, sculpture and specimen. Each wall sculpture describes a mysterious, hybridized and imagined organism in arrested motion. Latson’s complex artworks belie her simple materials. The artist hand-dyes embroidery floss in variations of a single dominant color and wraps the thread tightly and skillfully around her armature. The construction of each work entails countless hours of whipping and knotting resulting in dense, rich color and graceful, compelling compositions. Catherine Latson earned a BA in Biology from Macalester College, St Paul, MN. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including at The Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY and in the Macy’s Flowers Shows in Philadelphia, PA and New York, NY and has been featured in the American Craft Magazine and The New York Times. The artist works in Yonkers, NY.

  • Sujoon - Haint Blues - Large Sculputural Original Three-Dimensional Wall Art
    By Atticus Adams
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
Atticus Adams' organically composed modern metal sculptures embody the transformative power of contemporary wall art, illustrating the creation of beauty, meaning, and emotional impact from industrial materials. Using mostly aluminum mesh—generally found in screen doors, windows, and filters—he creates contemporary abstract sculptural artworks and installations, which resemble flowers, clouds, and other natural phenomena. Working in metal, Adams effortlessly transforms rigid material into airy, effervescent artworks. This circular 60-inch high by 60-inch wide and 4-inch deep metal sculpture is a lightweight form created from aluminum mesh, gesso, acrylic paint, and wire. It has metal rings affixed on the back which allows for easy installation. Atticus works spontaneously, feeling his way toward the objects that take shape in his mind as he shapes them almost entirely by hand. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Atticus grew up in West Virginia, steeped in traditional folk art. Several members of his family are self-taught artists, deeply involved in such crafts as wood carving and quilting. His formal art training includes stints at Yale, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard’s School of Architecture. Atticus has fond summer memories of screened-in porches back home and screen doors that practically dissolved the barrier between inside and outside, allowing the warmth and nature to permeate each day. This association continues to resonate in his art. “Metal mesh is a beautiful, flexible material that allows you to explore shadow and transparency in endless ways,” he says. “The material lends itself to these biomorphic shapes, which aren’t necessarily intentional . . . The sculptures seem fragile but are actually quite resilient—like nature itself.” A well-known sculptor, the organically inspired artworks of Atticus Adams are held in public and private collections and are exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States.
