About the Item
Cesar Andrade is an artist, poet and musician born in Guarico, Venezuela in 1939. He studied at El Tucayo and at the School of Fine Arts in Barquisimeto. In 1964 he became a professor at the School of Plastic Arts of Acarigua Venezuela. In 1968, after having held exhibitions in Venezuela, he travelled Europe and eventually moved to Paris. The following year, he presented his ‘linigramas’, which represented the first in-depth study on the analysis of line.
During the 1970s, he attended art courses held by Frank Popper at the University of Vincennes and by Jean Cassou at the Collège de France. As a kinetic artist, he works with the geometry of nails to ultimately create a vibrating surface. The primary elements of geometry, which dictate the arrangement of the nails, are the straight line and the point. solidity and emptiness are balanced, producing a vibration on the surface, while the diagonal and oblique lines convey unexpected elements, transforming the surface into a
grid.
We thus begin to understand that the key player of Andrade’s work is something outside the work itself: light. Direct frontal lighting would not allow us to perceive any depth; however, by directing the lighting to the side, one can then see a negative image - the shadow - which doubles the surface of the represented elements. The nail is always the focus of Andrade’s works, and the surprising negative space created between nail and shadow provokes a sensation of dizziness and unsteadiness. In this moment, the insignificance of the nail is completed by its shadow, thereby altering the appearance of the work. The physical surface dissolves, the location of the material is blurred, and the reflections of colour are scattered. He passed aways in 2022
