About the Item

Found objects, repurposed textiles Statement In work that integrates the theories and methodologies of both fine art and craft, I transform domestic cast-offs, such as old furniture, household goods, and textiles, into abstract sculptures. The armatures of found object assemblages are largely disguised with old bedsheets and clothing, like skin on a skeleton. Committed to environmentalism, I source rather than buy materials, saving everyday detritus from the landfills and rehabilitating them into sculptural forms. Like a hunter-gatherer, I seek out materials and save whatever comes my way until I have a use for it. I choose textile as a surface material because of its malleability, tactility, and confrontation to the dominant, patriarchal hierarchies of art throughout history. In an ongoing series of large-scale sculptures, I invent human-sized characters or archetypes with surrogate bodies representing outwardly facing personas. Found objects serve as armature while repurposed textiles are wrapped, knotted, and sewn onto the surfaces like skin on a skeleton. Works in this series carry titles such as The Gardener, The Caretaker, and The Griever, suggesting occupational or social roles. - Functioning as metaphors for engagement, they are homespun avatars for a hyper-mediated social world. A new series of small-scale sculptures take inspiration from my investigation of divination tools and practices, such as the tarot, and the symbols that I record in my sketchbooks. The four elements of air, earth, fire, water, and four directional coordinates of north, south, east, and west are a framework for this research into the inner self and inform aesthetic decisions. Words emerging from this practice play an integral role in the conception of each piece and the formal logistics of their form. Bio Courtney Puckett (b. Winter Park, FL) is a Hudson Valley-based visual artist and educator. She earned a BFA from MICA, MFA from Hunter College, and studied in Aix-en-Provence, France, Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, and the University of New Mexico. Solo exhibitions include Spring Break Art Show (NY), Furnace- Art on Paper Archive (CT), Hesse Flatow (NY), and Flecker Gallery at Suffolk County Community College (NY). Group exhibitions include the Schneider Museum of Art, Ashland (OR), Museum of Contemporary Art, Arlington (VA), Dorsky Museum at SUNY New Paltz (NY), NADA x Foreland (NY), Geary Contemporary (NY), White Columns (online), and BRICArts (NY). Artist Residencies include Yaddo (NY), Constance Saltonstall Foundation (NY), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), LMCC’s Workspace Program (NY), Vermont Studio Center (VT) (full fellowship), and a community research grant through River Valley Arts Collective. Puckett is an Instructor of Art at CT State Northwestern and has taught at FIT, Parsons School of Design, and Pratt Institute. Courtney Puckett’s work integrates the theories and methodologies of both fine art and craft by transforming domestic cast-offs, such as old furniture, household goods and textiles into abstract sculptures. Committed to environmentalism, she sources rather than buys materials, saving everyday detritus from the landfills and rehabilitating them into sculptural forms. Puckett uses textiles as a surface material because of the malleability and tactility of the materials. She simultaneously confronts the dominant, patriarchal hierarchies of art throughout history. Her sculptures on view in Talking Threads are inspired by her investigation of divination tools and practices, such as the tarot and the symbols she records in her sketchbooks. The four elements of air, earth, fire, water and the four compass points—north, south, east and west—are a framework for Puckett’s research into the inner self and inform her aesthetic decisions. Words that emerge from practices such as the tarot play an integral role in the conception of each piece and the construction of their form. Exhibited in "Talking Threads," Susan Eley Fine Art, Hudson, NY

    By PJ Linden
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This piece titled "Petroleum Bubble Sunsets (pair)" is an original artwork by PJ Linden and is made from dimensional paint on ALIFE Leather Suede Sneakers. This piece measures 6.5"h x 8.5'w 11"d each shoe. Linden uniquely refines the use of non-traditional mediums, such as the kitschy, dimensional fabric paint, oft-referred to as puff paint, seeking to transfigure the biological into the supernatural, as filtered through the prism of a consumerist culture predicated upon the synthetic and the mass-produced. Born 1985 Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. PJ Linden is a New York City and Pennsylvania-based fine artist known for her abstract, three-dimensional work. She paints with machine-like precision, creating microscopic patterns on found objects, fashion, and technology. Linden got her start working with Patricia Field, creating custom, one-of-a-kind art and fashion under the name Wonderpuss Octopus. At Field's iconic, namesake boutique, Linden's work caught the eye of celebrity clients including Beyonce, Willow Smith, Kelly Osborne, and Solange Knowles...
