About the Item
'Ulu Oti' is a contemporary cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from the Chill Project Series. This sculpture is made from soda glass that was then mixed with cobalt and copper to create the light blue color. The piece is initially derived from a tree root that was covered in mud. It was cleaned and then recovered in mud to create more texture to the artists liking. The final product is a natural, but abstract form. Ink was added to heighten the contrasting textures against colored glass. This creates a multifaceted piece that changes throughout the day in natural light.
About the Chill Project Series:
The Chill Project a series of works in cast glass translating textures of ice and rock into a vision of cold, inspired by a warming planet. The resulting sculpture shows layered time from the quotidian rotation of the earth to deep geologic layering and formation of our planet. David's interest in natural forms was uniquely inspired by my Antarctic Artists and Writers Program grant in 2006, where he began to use geologic textures to explore environmental light within his sculptures. Two pieces of personal evolution happened in the process. One was that he discovered how different glass and ice are in just about every way, in optics, workability, color and feel. The later revelation was how much the geology in cast glass combined with sunlight showed layers of time: the daily and yearly rotation of the earth and in the making of the glass. This ongoing effort can examine the swirl of forces that shape our lives as seen through geology and light.

Educated at Hunter College in New York, he has shown consistently in solo and group exhibitions since 2002, including locations in New York, Berlin, Los Angeles, Basel, Madrid and Paris. He currently lives and works in New York. Through his abstract paintings, drawings and sculptures he finds the sweet spot where minimalism, Pop Art, and the political collide. Andisheh Avini is known for his patterned silkscreen painting created on carpet and wood, which are informed by the history and culture of Iran. Avini frequently takes familiar political images and recontextualizes them, prompting the viewer to consider Middle Eastern politics from another perspective. Blending the visual vocabulary of his Iranian heritage with aesthetic and material experimentation, Avini’s work offers a meditation on the experiences and memories that shape our identities. He has used a variety of exotic materials including marquetry or Khatam – a traditional Iranian craft of inlaid wood, crystalline protrusions of actual minerals, peacock feathers, mother-of-pearl and parchment often in abstract geometric compositions, mediums associated with traditional Persian craft— with nods towards Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, and other Western art movements. He has shown in many prominent galleries including solo exhibitions at Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Galerie Frank...Category
