About the Item

About this piece: "Sometimes you have to crack a material to remind yourself how far you can push it from the standard. As you push and pull, you just gotta let it holla. Hell, society is already complacent in letting the cracks in the system holler so..." -Desmond Lewis This freestanding sculpture can be displayed on a pedestal, table, or on the ground. Its contrasting textures of smooth black steel and rough gray concrete add visual interest that keeps the viewer coming back. Exhibition Statement: "The work in 'Broke' explores the notion of what it means for a material to fracture under stress from the confinement of American infrastructure. Industrial materials are usually able to withstand abuse and harsh environments much like the aggressive experiences that Black people have had to be resistant to in the US. Consequently, the cyclical nature of pressure and weight can push a material to deform much like America contorts in its recurring cycle of wokeness in the recognition of the value of Black lives. America greatly praises its economic system built on pillars of whiteness, but it isn't until a longstanding crack in a bridge, located within a major Black city, does this country pause to acknowledge an infrastructure pushed too far. Ironically, the massive cost of this repair and subsequent reopening of the bridge to commerce doesn't mater to power entities much as Black folks continue to wonder when it will matter and at what cost will systematic structural repair of their communities will arrive. The structural strength of material is often tested and perseveres through environmental challenges for which man cannot control. Resisting failure. The strength of Black Americans has been tested since 1619, but we will continue to emerge as resilient through the uncontrollable concepts of material and race are embodied through metaphorical representations found within the sculptures in the exhibition." -Desmond Lewis Artist Bio: Desmond Lewis was born and raised in Nashville, TN and currently resides in New Have, CT. He earned his BS from Tennessee State University, an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Memphis and an MBA from The University of Tennessee at Martin. Desmond has completed residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center, and Pittsburgh Glass Center. Desmond's work can be found in several public and private collections around the US including: Penland School of Crafts, Carolina Bronze Sculpture Park, City of Hickory, NC, Vermont Carving and Sculpture Center, The University of Memphis, Soulsville USA, NexAir LLC, Skowhegan Parks and Recreation, Orange Mound Neighborhood and Veterans Association, and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. Desmond is on the Board of Directors at the Metal Museum. He is currently a Lecturer in Sculpture and the Fabrication Shops Coordinator in the School of Art at Yale University.
