Papier Mâché Sculpture Nikolai One of a Kind Made in France

About the Item

Nikolai by Eric de Dormael, Galerie Negropontes in Paris, France - Papier mâché and patinated brass Éric de Dormael is an unconventional artist, his trajectory far from the beaten track. Trained at the Saint-Luc school in Tournai and at the Atelier Met in Penninghen, he explored many creative avenues before devoting himself to designing luminaires. His exceptional, limited-edition pieces gradually took on monumental proportions. He began working for interior decorators and designers, and in the world of luxury. With passion and rigour, his work progressively freed itself from any utilitarian function, crossing the line from object to work of art, creating veritable light sculptures. Deeply attached to design and pure lines, he places fundamental importance on the architectural structure of each piece. Brass, a noble and pliable material, along with plaster or bronze enable him to make light and shadow meet. Light, poetic and glistening, his works are both material and immaterial.

Paper mache "Les Argonautes" Artist: JS. Ferlay Vallauris Workshop "Les Argonautes", Vallauris: Isabelle Ferlay (1917-?) And Frédérique Bourguet (1925-1997) Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet founded their ceramic workshop in Vallauris in 1953, which they named "Les Argonautes", in reference to the famous Greek epic. Isabelle studied painting at the Fine Arts school of Lyon in 1940, then she attended the Fine Arts in Marseille. Finally, she finished her artistic training in Montpellier, at the Fontcarade national school, where she learned ceramics. Françoise dit Frédérique Bourguet studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier until 1945 and it was in Sèvres, in Françoise Bizette's studio, that she trained in the art of ceramics. She created her first workshop in Paris in 1945, which she shared with Valentine Schlegel until 1951. The two women ceramicists then practiced modeling technique. It was in 1953 that she met Isabelle Ferlay and together, they decided to set up a workshop in Vallauris. They produce shaped pieces, sometimes molded, made of earthenware, enamelled in bright colors. In the 1970s they made stoneware cooked over a wood fire. Some ceramists frequented their workshop, notably the very talented Jacques Innocenti and François Raty.

Artist Nathaniel Covington constructs bold, colorfully sculpted papier-mâché monster masks and large, pop art creature paintings. His art pieces have simple lines, set against solid color backgrounds. For Nathaniel, the process starts with rough sketches on paper, wood, skateboards - just about anything he can draw on, allowing him the vision to finalize his art. The making of masks started about 3 years ago and he fell in love with the process. It’s an opportunity to bring to life all the “Creatures” and wildly funny things living in my head. He says, "I’d like the art pieces that I make to evoke some sort of emotion when they are seen.” He’s predominately influenced by 1969’s-1980’s “Creature Feature Films”, horror soundtracks, Sci-Fi magazines, plus a dash of Ed Roth.
