About the Item

Francis Pellerin, born April 2, 1915 in Cancale and died September 30, 1998 in Rennes, is a French sculptor. Son of a Terre-Neuvas sailor, Francis Pellerin entered the school of fine arts in Rennes in 1938 in the studio of Camille Godet. He won first prize in cabinetmaking in 1930. Then He studies at the Ecole des Beaux art of Paris to the sculptor Albert Bourget's studio and, in 1935, to Jean Boucher's sculptor studio. His first workshop is located rue du Moulin de Beurre in the 14th arrondissement next to that of his friend Émile Gilioli. The first prize Chenavard will be awarded to him for Adam and Eve chased from earthly paradise in 1939. He won a bronze medal at the Salon des artistes français before his mobilization (from 1939 to 1941) during the Second World War. In 1942 he won the Prix Roux. He met Charles Despiau, Paul Landowski and Gustave Miklos in Marcel Gaumont's studio at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He collaborates in the decoration of the Museum of African and Oceanic Art. By competing for the Prix de Rome of 1943, he met Suzanne Deregnaucourt, whom he married the following year, and they had four children. He obtained the first grand prix of Rome in sculpture for the Amazon in July 1944. In 1948 he also won the Prix Lefèvre, awarded every four years for the best Prix de Rome. From 1946 to 1948, he was a resident of the Villa Medici in Rome, his sculpture The Crucified will receive in 1948 the prize for best shipment of Rome. Returned to France, Francis Pellerin moved to Rennes in 1948 and taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Rennes School of Architecture. He participates in numerous public commissions (schools, places of worship, cultural spaces) in collaboration with architects and craftsmen. From 1952 to 1962, he painted numerous oils on abstract canvases, exhibited at the Hautefeuille gallery in Paris in 1962. In 1960, invited by Georges Folmer, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Realities Nouvelles. In 1961, he will promote the "Groupe Mesure" 2 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rennes. He will participate, until 1965, in this group's exhibitions abroad. In 1978, he left teaching to devote himself fully to new artistic research: geometric paintings, collages, polychrome wood sculptures. At the same time, he made new monumental works: murals, cloisters, granite stelae. He also exhibits in cultural centers and galleries. Francis Pellerin died in Rennes on September 30, 1998. That beautifull sculpture is from the end of the 60's. It's laqued on iron, so, it can stay outside. It is in good condition, only littles scratches and on the détail, you can sea little part not perfect. But it has been done by the sculptor itself. There is a certificate.
