About

GEORGE SUGARMAN Threesome, 1968-1969 Acrylic on wood 84 3/4 x 156 x 120 inches Large sculpture. Space opens up ever more in Threesome (1968-1969), perhaps the most elegant and graceful of the artist's 1960s sculptures. Its trio of trim vertical elements are distinguished in classic Sugarman style by their colors: pale blue, bright red, and, for a two-part unit, yellow and white. The fact that the sculpture's only two-part unit is also the only element with two colors instead of one is among this work's many subtle dynamics. Threesome does brilliant things with right angles and sloping lines, and as viewers move around and among its stretched-out uprights, they discover that the sculpture's open forms must simultaneously be looked at and through. - Raphael Rubinstein
