Abstract Metal Steel Sculpture Howard Lewis - "Slow Curves"

2012

About the Item

This abstract metal sculpture by Howard Lewis is made from a solid bar of recycled steel. It has been cut, shaped, polished and "carved" with abrasives and intense heat revealing a variety of textures both on the surface and the interior. Since it's made from solid steel it is heavy for its size and has a commanding presence. The two wood bases are made from reclaimed old wood that reflect the imperfections that come with age. Weight 28lbs Size of steel cylinder part of sculpture has a diameter of approximately 2.5 inches x height 23.5 inches Size of sculpture from base to top 27.5 inches Diameter of bottom base is 10 inches The artist mark is on the underside of the steel part of the sculpture and shown in the photographs. The date is marked as '12 indicating 2012. Documentation can be provided by the artist. "I’m fascinated by archeology and geologic time spans so I try to create sculpture that reflects not only our current time and emotions, but also can convey a sense of time on a grander scale. I do this by adding another dimension that alludes to slow decay or growth. The very act of manipulating steel is primitive and historical; using heat to cut, bend and fuse is thousands of years old. And I sense that primal element when I’m working. Inspired by objects that have endured natural forces over eons such as dinosaur bones, volcanic rock and stone-age tools I’m challenged to shape the metal into something that connotes powerful forces, inspires reflection and encourages one to reach out and touch." Howard Lewis About Howard Lewis Howard Lewis sculpts in steel, shaping metal at times as if it were clay. He’s known for working in thick, heavy metals that offer a medium to reflect the powerful forces expressed, creating objects that stand the test of time. He is known for both fine art photography and sculpture. Lewis’ art, both photography and sculpture has been widely collected and exhibited in galleries and cultural centers internationally, including the Gladstone Regional Museum and Gallery in Queensland, Australia, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts in Tampa; the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania; the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science in Midland, Michigan; the New York Center for Photographic Arts; He is also represented in several major corporate collections. The artist can be contacted directly via the messaging in 1stdibs and will make every effort to respond quickly.

My sculptures transcend the confines of representational art, freeing the viewer from the constraints of the familiar. I invite viewers to question and discover the uncharted territories of their own imagination, and create a pause—a moment for people to think and feel without the need for clear explanations. Fascinated by archeology and geologic time spans, my work reflects not only our current time and emotions, but also conveys a sense of time on a grander scale.
