About the Item
This abstract metal sculpture by Howard Lewis is made from a solid bar of recycled steel. It has been cut, shaped, polished and "carved" with abrasives and intense heat revealing a variety of textures both on the surface and the interior. Since it's made from solid steel it is heavy for its size and has a commanding presence. The two wood bases are made from reclaimed old wood that reflect the imperfections that come with age.

"I’m fascinated by archeology and geologic time spans so I try to create sculpture that reflects not only our current time and emotions, but also can convey a sense of time on a grander scale. I do this by adding another dimension that alludes to slow decay or growth. The very act of manipulating steel is primitive and historical; using heat to cut, bend and fuse is thousands of years old. And I sense that primal element when I’m working. Inspired by objects that have endured natural forces over eons such as dinosaur bones, volcanic rock and stone-age tools I’m challenged to shape the metal into something that connotes powerful forces, inspires reflection and encourages one to reach out and touch."
