Jana Osterman
Biomorphic No 17 - smooth, carved, stained, polished wood, abstract sculpture

2021

About the Item

As if discovered on a walk in the forest, this hand carved wooden sculpture emulates shapes seen in nature. Osterman first scorched the catalpa wood to draw out the three-dimensional texture of the wood grain prior to staining it to a deep lustrous black. Osterman’s biomorphic work is intended to evoke images of living things whether plants or humans. The holes in this piece underscore its natural, organic inspiration. “This series of carved wood pieces was an exploration of textured biomorphic forms, using the wood growth lines as an addition to the rhythmic, shape shifting topography. ”Jana Osterman Born in Slovenia, Jana Osterman moved to Holland where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She continued with printmaking studies in England. For the last 20 years, Osterman has worked as a full-time artist and fabricator in Canada, first in Toronto and now in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Osterman’s artworks, including public commissions, are held in collections in Canada, Slovenia, Germany, England and Dubai.

Hudson, NY - based artist Jason Middlebrook. Middlebrook takes inspiration from lived experience and the natural world with his signature hardwood paintings. Familiar yet enigmatic, the sky in its various forms serves as muse in "Skies." Never the same twice, the sky is ever-changing, differing dramatically from place to place and throughout each day. At times seemingly benevolent and at others cruel, the vast sky is in constant diaphanous conversation with the landscape and activity below. Middlebrook’s signature “canvas” of polished cross...
