Joan Grubin
Detritus #4, multicolored acrylic on pressed wood abstract wall sculpture, 2015

2015

About the Item

Joan Grubin creates dimensional installations, objects, and smaller wall works that revolve around a collaboration between the physical presence of pigment on paper and the visible but immaterial partners of reflected color, cast shadows, and negative space. The minimal physical materiality of paper, as well as an extreme economy of means, support the notion that much can come from very little. Paper brings with it a buoyancy and warmth, and keeps the work close the spirit of its conception and the process of its making. Grubin's practice has been moving steadily towards an engagement with the space in which it appears. Often it is made in response to a particular venue, its lighting characteristics, perhaps some architectural feature - so that the surrounding space becomes an extension of the work itself. • Untitled, orange biomorphic flora-like ceramic sculpture, 2015
    By Christopher Adams
    Located in New York, NY
Christopher Adams creates sculptures that play on biological concepts, specifically adaptive radiation, whereby a pioneering organism enters an untapped environment and then differentiates rapidly without departing too much from its original form. His sculptures suggest varieties of creatures, but not necessarily a specific organism. Many works are suggestive of plant life with leafy tendrils and frayed edges. Adams graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College...

Familiar yet enigmatic, the sky in its various forms serves as muse in "Skies." Never the same twice, the sky is ever-changing, differing dramatically from place to place and throughout each day. At times seemingly benevolent and at others cruel, the vast sky is in constant diaphanous conversation with the landscape and activity below. Middlebrook’s signature “canvas” of polished cross...
