Katie Yang
Serendipity : small interior sculpture out of clay

About the Item

A small clay sculpture by Katie Yang. Katie Yang was born in Taiwan and immigrated to New York City when she was 14. She became a corporate lawyer and practiced law for many years. However, she always dreamed of creating art and ultimately quit her law career and has been making ceramic sculptures full time for the past six years. Katie’s abstract ceramic sculptures explore how we experience the unknowable nature of our world and how we try to control and make sense of it. Her work and process juxtapose certainty and deliberate intent with chance. Having grown up in both Asia and New York, she is influenced by artistic traditions both East and West – the nuances of Chinese ink, the clean lines of Brancusi, the versatility of Noguchi, and the colors of Monet. Katie’s organic sculptures add layers, dimensionality and textures to a space and make our experience richer. She often installs her work in groupings to create a dialogue between each piece as well as with the viewer – a visual conversation. Her work will be a wonderful addition to any interior.

The art forms appear and are created as stories in the round as I transform and mutate a magic fusion of colors, shapes and a way of life into them. I often use faces joined by zigzag or curved lines. Flower petals characteristically fashion the idea of dealing with one’s aura. Some of the vessel forms I use (the goddess series) are used to symbolically connect earth to women… a container used for nutrients of survival. My work also speaks of healing.
