About the Item

About her Stratified Finger Pots - Clay is an incredibly responsive and versatility material. These pieces were inspired by Hoodoo landscape of southern Alberta, Canada. The surface is created by repetitively layering coils and marking them to create a sense of movement. Using her hands and tools Kim marks each coil, repeating the process until she is satisfied after which the sculptures are soda fired. This particular SFP has a beautiful turquoise inner glaze which contrasts with the black outer coating. Kim Ross believes the meaning of beautiful ceramic objects resides in the making process. Using simple forms in her creations allows for accessibility and familiarity. Surface design is created by the unpredictable firing and glazing processes that allows fate to make each piece unique.

Porcelain allows me stretch and shape the clay in any way I choose and offers a blank canvas for my floral imagery and luscious, rich glazes to blend. The forms I create are tight and precise with a sense of restricted volume. I use bands around the form to constrict specific areas of each piece, while at the same time creating space for the volume and fullness to escape. The bands create registers to frame my drawings and paintings of floral imagery. The way I combine surface and form is inspired by Ming Dynasty porcelain...
