CHEF'S HAT - Intricate Collage Wall Hanging Sculpture w/ Thick Painted Paper

2021

About the Item

"I welcome the continual emergence of change, evolution, and the inevitable challenges that form a large part of a working artist’s life." With CHEF'S HAT, a recent and evolving work, I am moving into more dimensionality and space. My intention is to push patterned and embellished surfaces on paper from its naturally flat surface into a more structural and spatial plane. This involves making sculptural pieces from paper and experimenting with new construction methods using strips and lengths of paper over-lapped and fastened together, shaped into objects with physical presence. I feel I am migrating from the flat surface into the third dimension. I envision the paper constructions as a landscape to be wandered in and out of, through and around, a space that invites all and sundry to enter on their own terms. I hold firmly to the belief that my work exhibits a playfulness that belies a more serious assessment of our social world. I am interested in how something that is initially perceived as frivolous and celebratory can constitute a reaction against and resistance to the shadowy world of misfortune, hard luck, and weariness. Born in 1959, Lanie Gannon was predominantly inspired by the 1970s. Conceptualism is often perceived as a reaction to Minimalism, and the leading art movement of the 1970s, challenging the boundaries of art with its revolutionary features. The movements that succeeded were all representative of a strong desire to evolve and strengthen the art world, in response to the tensions of the previous 1960s. Process art branched out from Conceptualism, highlighting some of its most crucial aspects, but going further in creating mysterious and experimental artistic journeys, while Land Art brought creation to the outsides, initiating early philosophies of environmentalism. In Germany, Expressive figure painting was given a second chance for the first time since the decline of Abstract Expressionism almost twenty years ago, the genre reclaimed its distinction through the brushstrokes of Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. "A pair of scissors is a drawing tool. Cutting a line, like a road map on the surface of paper, releases shapes that can be fastened, linked, and connected into a structure. This becomes a foundation to build upon. Paper also lends itself to improvisation. It can be so delicate that it retains the imprint of memory, and so strong and versatile that its materiality exists in a realm between fabric and wood. With a pair of scissors and paper, I can fashion a rib cage, and construct a corset or armor that warps and wefts into a woven synthesis of color, pattern, decorative trim, ornamentation, frippery, and finery. My work is a diversion, a coverup, a decorative camouflage with teeth. Like a bird’s plumage enticing its admirers to take a closer look."

  • INTERGALACTIC BOTTLE SERVICE - Geometric Wall Hanging Sculpture w/ Blue Lines
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
INTERGALACTIC BOTTLE SERVICE is a playful title, it draws the viewer into the work by activating the imagination—that playful part of ourselves that makes artistic creativity possible. I titled this work based on my wife’s reaction, who upon seeing the work exclaimed "It's like drinking champagne on a spaceship!" When viewers look at this piece, I would delight in them having the same reaction, and running away with their imaginations. Now, when I look at this work, I imagine my partner and I propelled five hundred years into the future, where this work is displayed in a very exclusive VIP lounge on a luxury spaceship. Here, in the red velveteen booth beneath this painting the bourgeoisie are wearing white 1920’s...

  • Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting relief
    Located in Doetinchem, NL
Nocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...
