About the Item

OLAP 3 Outdoor and Indoor sculpture Steel Pascal creates an extraordinary range of abstract meditations that seem to arise directly from the medium itself, rather than from a conscious plan. His contemporary sculptures have been exhibited in over 150 national and international art galleries since 1990; in addition to permanent public and private commissions, and corporate collections throughout the world. About the Steel sculptures: "For quite some time I have had the idea of creating sculptures that could be presented both indoors and outdoors. This required thinking thoroughly about shape, material, size and color. It is difficult today to find three dimensional work that is reasonably priced and in an average scale of six feet in height. These are a few of the reasons I decided to take on the challenge of this project. I began by making several small scale ‘’maquettes’’ in wood. Instead of envisioning each model as a component for one sculpture, I found that each piece could be utilized in numerous combinations by rotating or reversing them. The first five pieces that I did in steel had the potential to create 39 other combinations! One of the advantages to this, was that I was able to create (and photograph) 44 different sculptures from the first five pieces that I created. Each piece is built in steel. There is no mold, this process is called fabricated steel. Each plate is laser cut, welded, finished and patinated with the maximum precision. Each piece is an edition of 8 pieces + 1 artist proof. Outdoor: All outdoor sculptures require maintenance, more so if the climate humid. Any part of the sculpture that features a rusted patina will continue to rust until it is a nice bright orange color. By applying ‘’WD40’’ every month, the rusted patina will keep a smooth dark waxy feeling. It is not necessary to use WD40 if the natural rusty color is appreciated. All the colors are ‘’Power Coated’’ paint. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer. It is usually used to create a hard finish that is tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is the finish commonly used on appliances such as ovens and bathtubs. For more protection a coat of varnish protectant anti UV is added to the colored pieces. Even with all these good qualities in the product it is essential to maintain the colored part as well by using any high quality car wax/cleaner. Apply a spray or a wax every two to three months, this will assist in keeping a nice and fresh aspect of the piece. Indoor: Much easier than the outside pieces, of course. It is recommended that once a year you do the same maintenance as outlined above. For the rusted components, instead of WD40 please use a furniture wax or spray. About installation, depending where the piece will be installed, it may need additional brackets at the base to stabilize the structure. It all depends if the area has public access or private, if kids will be playing around it, or if it is installed in a state that has high earthquake/hurricane warnings. The aspect of the ground is also important to take in consideration for stabilization and look of the piece. Any surface as sand, soil, grass or gravel is usually an easy surface to add brackets. Wood, tile and cement make it more difficult than excepted when brackets are needed. So they will need to be designed ahead of time. Working case by case is probably the best way to achieve a nice installation. It will always be better for me to receive detailed pictures of the area to know what would be the best in terms of installation. I would say that most of the time, it may not need anything extra. As you can imagine the higher and narrower the piece, the more effort we will have to put in the bracket design. Indoor pieces would not need any additional brackets, but a wider base can always be built if the collector wants it. The brackets are included in the price if they are simple, The extra base (larger) for indoor are not included in my price. Usually brackets will run between $200.- $300.
