Richard Klein
Saint-Gobain VW, Mirrored Glass Wall Sculpture, White Gold Window, Copper Wing

2022

About the Item

In this wall-mounted sculpture, a copper and nickel-plated crow's wing extends out from a shaped piece of glass, a window from a 1990 Volkswagen Passat mirrored with white gold leaf. Richard Klein has utilized found objects in his sculptural work since the late 1990s. The objects are commonplace—cheap, everyday castoffs from our material culture that are sourced from the recycling stream, tag sales and flea markets. He values found objects because of the meanings and associations that come their former roles in our lives - they are vessels that can hold and contain substances, feelings, and ideas. Klein is inclined to use glass, often selecting bottles, eye glass lenses, or mirrors. Their transparency, refraction, and reflection speak of the immaterial. Obsessive craftsmanship, repetition, and accumulation reinforce materiality. Analogous to the human condition, these small sculptures exist in the space between these two extremes. The historical and cultural influences in Klein’s work include (among other things) Surrealism, ‘Outsider” Art, Arte Povera, psychedelia and optical science. Despite its philosophical rigor, the art always revels in an undeniable sense of elegance and beauty.

  • Mianas Creek, Hanging Sculpture, Torch-Worked Glass, Blue, Green, Pink Loops
    By David Licata
    Located in Kent, CT
This hanging sculpture by David Licata is composed of free-form circular and oval loops of torch-worked borosilicate glass in dark cobalt blue, light green, light blue, teal and golden pink. The loops, in varying sizes and textures, cascade downward from a blue glass rod, joined together at different lengths creating a dynamic asymmetry. The glass rod is supported by two metal brackets that can be installed in the wall. The result is an ethereal, delicate work that casts dynamic shadows on its surroundings and glistens in light. Transforming rods of borosilicate glass with fire, David Licata uses a variety of gas torches to pull, stripe, blend, twist and bend glass into ornate loops which are transformed into an elaborate wall sculptures of undulating glass. Variously transparent and opaque, solid and ephemeral, his glass sculptures are solid forms and also cast shadows that are fugitive and integral parts of the artwork. David Licata’s work ranges from cascading glass wall sculptures to wearable chain maille. A devoted naturalist, he is inspired by hiking and the outdoors. The artist works with notions of the fragility, strength, vanity, and protection by using traditional metalsmithing techniques in the intricate torch-worked glass. David Licata is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art where he earned his MFA in Metalsmithing and of SUNY New Paltz where he earned his BFA in Sculpture and BS in Art Education. Licata’s artwork has been exhibited at SOFA (The Sculpture Objects Functional Art and Design fair) NY, SOFA Chicago, Glass Weekend, Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, Millville, NJ, Talente Internationale Handwerksmesse, Munich Germany and The Glass Art Society Conference and Fashion Show in Murano, Italy. The artist exhibits and has executed numerous site-specific commissions with Kenise Barnes...

Licata who is exceptionally knowledgeable and adept at creating historic chaine maille patterns often bases his contemporary artwork in that tradition. Licata’s sculptures explore the ideas of protection inherant in chain maille and linked fencing in contradiction to the implicit fragility of glass.
