Scott Troxel
American Contemporary Sculpture by Scott Troxel - Convergence Gold

2019

About the Item

Artwork made with Mahogany on MDF painted with metallic gold gloss automotive enamel The inspiration for this piece in terms of design and color came from the mid century modern movement. The artist loves to combine the warmth of organic wood tones with clean modern colors and lines. In this case, the gold metallic and white tones suggest a 1950's color palette when combined with rich warm mahogany. The design harkens back to the sputnik style lighting, wall sculpture and mirrors that were popular during this time. Scott loves to use these pieces for inspiration because they managed to look both organic and futuristic at the same time. The force of the Mahogany jutting in towards the center implies inward energy, while the pinlines and shiny metallic areas are a nod to one of my biggest inspirations, Frank Stella. The name comes from the design where all the lines of force converge on the center point. To him the piece can be a metaphor for the business of our lives sometimes. Life can feel like everyone and everything are squeezing us and the pressure is constantly building up.

Zephyr Wood, paint, lacquer on MDF + birch on MDF with enamel & wax finish 24" x 24” x 1” Zephyr II is a mixed media wall sculpture. Made from oils on birch, wax, MDF and copper spray enamel. Finished with a hand waxed process. Zephyr II is a complex and sophisticated monochromatic piece which is minimalistic in nature, so the form, composition and the balance of the artwork trumps any definitive subject matter. With flowing Art Deco inspired lines and midcentury feel, Zephyr feels at once modern and retro. The bold copper background...

  • Untitled
    By Koji Takei
    Located in Santa Monica, CA
Creating sculptures of exquisite peculiarity is an art in which Takei excels. His elegantly crafted works embody the notion of the whimsical, contradictory and idiosyncratic. There is an immediately detectable sense of humor and quick wit about the sculptures in this exhibition. Beyond playfulness, however, Takei’s aim is to challenge the viewer to alter the way in which they look at reality. Taking cues from the Surrealists of the early 20th century, Takei transforms the mundane into the fantastic - and sometimes absurd. His work is a constant inquiry into the meaning of functionality and the perception of purpose. Much like Man Ray’s iconic readymade sculpture, The Gift (1921), and Meret Oppenheim’s infamous fur-covered teacup (Object, 1936), Takei recontextualizes those pragmatic objects that we immediately recognize. With his piece Soft Shoulders (2011), Takei deconstructs a wooden clothes hanger...
