Steven Heinemann
Afterlife No 4 - glossy black, grey, nature inspired, elongated, ceramic vessel

2021

About the Item

Canadian artist Steven Heinemann continues to re-define the limits of ceramic art with a new series of uniquely beautiful bowls called ‘Afterlife.’ This oval-shaped ceramic bowl has a glossy black exterior finish, and the interior is textured in a neutral gray providing depth and contrast to the piece. Heinemann is known for exploring the natural world and its ancient history and in so doing creates pieces that reflect both themes. “While you might say the bowl has this inherent modesty, it also offers a kind of theatre in which space can be activated, or some event takes place. In my case that seems to be tied to phenomena, pattern, somewhere between organic growth and geologic event.” Steven Heinemann He earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Heinemann has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982. Heinemann's work is held in museums the world over. He has received many national and international awards including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.
