Steven Heinemann
La Bouche - playful, red, white, abstract, elongated, ceramic wall sculpture

2018

About the Item

It is a striking piece. Steven Heinemann’s wall mounted ceramic sculpture has a bold fluid organic form and equally bold colour—deep red. Called “La Bouche” which means mouth in French, the shape of this ceramic piece resembles a mouth, wrapped in bright white. The much-celebrated ceramicist’s work has redefined the limits of ceramic art. The artist revealed he had recently re-watched the dark film, “The Joker’ and found it quite moving. Inspiration? “I was looking for a rethinking and placing it on the wall offered that. Once on the wall, the red space may not read as concave till viewed up close and that illusion can create a feeling of an open space (yes, including a mouth).” Steven Heinemann He earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Since his first solo exhibition in 1982 at the Ontario Crafts Council, he has exhibited continuously. Heinemann's work is held in museums the world over. He has received many national and international awards including the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.

  • Metamorphosis
    By Jared Fitzgerald

“Metamorphosis” is a unique over-glaze Chinese porcelain pot by renowned ceramist and painter, Jared FitzGerald. Blowing in the wind. The wind crosses to the mountain and loops lazily in circles in the blue sky. “Metamorphosis” is part of a new series from Fitzgerald’s studios in Jingdezhen, China. This series uses over-glaze, a new ceramic firing technique that diverges from Fitzgerald’s previous ceramic practice, which used the traditional under-glaze technique with blue and white colors. Over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint with a range of colors; unlike with other glaze techniques, such as under- or middle-glaze, over-glaze allows FitzGerald to paint onto an already fired ceramic panel, so there is no serious change in the color of the pigments. This is a special technique which allows the artist to mix Chinese painting techniques with western techniques derived from oil painting. Over-glaze decoration is considered one of the most important modern glaze techniques in Jingdezhen now. The traditional overglaze decorative colors in Jingdezhen include Gucai (antique colors...
