- Biomorphic Blue No 11 - smooth, pigmented Winterstone, abstract sculptureBy Jana OstermanLocated in Bloomfield, ONThe natural world inspires the beautiful organic forms of artist Jana Osterman. This deep blue patinated winterstone sculpture suggests the shape and movement of tree roots. It is polished with a protective wax giving it a light sheen. “Tree roots hold traces and impressions of where they held on but still suggest the smooth, and continuous movement, the flow of water." Jana Osterman Born in Slovenia, Osterman moved to Holland where she studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. She continued with printmaking studies in England. For the last 20 years, Osterman has worked as a full-time artist and fabricator in Canada, first in Toronto and now in Prince Edward County...Category

- Contemporary, Geometric, Ceramic, Vessel, Sculpture, Stoneware, Glaze, DesignBy Judith ErnstLocated in St. Louis, MOOriginally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways. Outcroppings 02, Repeating Geometric Ceramic Vessel...Category

- Contemporary Porcelain Sculpture with Intricate Ceramic Decals, Colorful PatternBy Jesse SmallLocated in St. Louis, MOSmall’s work includes porcelain figurines and lace-like steel chandeliers inspired by branches and twigs he has documented during his travels. While in China, Small’s porcelain forms developed as visual communicators, in a culture where he didn’t speak the language. Like tattoos, Small’s glaze imagery of colorful Chinese trucks, buses, traditional motifs, nature and ornament float on the skin of his two primary porcelain forms, Talk Bubbles and Ghosts. Small’s steel chandeliers contain echoes of the opulent past of the 17th & 18th century, but have been set free of function and the restraint of tradition. Constructed of filigreed steel cut by computer controlled machines, the chandeliers are composed of “fins” of metal lace, hinged around a central axis. Small’s chandeliers are suspended sculptures that question the origins of ornamental habits. Major stylistic revolutions such as Bauhaus or Pop demolish definitions and use of ornament, but many old habits slip through the cracks.
