About the Item

This is a mixed-media sculpture by Tom Holmes. Holmes creates outdoor sculptures as well as smaller works made for interior display. This particular piece is made to be installed outdoors, and rests upon a tall plinth. Although it is a bard house, this piece also resembles a totem. He works in a range of styles and materials, and his abstract pieces are as diverse as his interests. Tom Holmes is a Pennsylvania-based sculptor and musician. He works in stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. Utilizing these elements in response to the natural environment, Tom crafts art events for the changing seasons. He holds a BA in music theory, composition and performance from the Crane School of Music at Potsdam New York. He has studied instrument construction for the past 15 years with Ben Hume of New York City, the worlds leading authority on ancient Central Asian musical instruments before 1200 A.D.. He has traveled the Pacific playing the great classic works with the Long Island Youth Orchestra. "My life is my art. There is no delineation between who I am and what I create. The essence of food, friends, music and love is at the epicenter of the everyday. I work seasonally, tracking the weather. Different temperatures demand independent responses to materials and approaches. "Ice follows the freezing mark of winter, stone and steel the exterior work space of summer. Spring begins the search for materials and fall settles all debts; emotional, physical and intellectual." Tom Holmes’ work has been exhibited at numerous cultural institutions and galleries across the US, including the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum, Beacon Artists Union and Texas Museum of Art.
