William Robinson
Twisting in the Wind

About the Item

Black Basalt Stone “My inspiration is drawn from the sum of my life experiences, the amplified or muted, to fit my emotional state at the mo-ment when I am actually creating, designing, or working.” Will Robinson was born in Bremerton, Washington and studied History at the University of Washington. Robinson's desire to create art began at an early age, growing up in a home filled with art, antiques and Bonsai. He chooses to work primarily with stone because of its solidity and ability to withstand the elements and time. Varying textures integrate smooth and rough surfaces, creating intriguing duality in the stone. He encourages viewers to touch his work; engaging with the stone creates a connection between the medium, the artist, and the viewer. Foster/White Gallery has been exhibiting Robinson’s work since 1996. His stone sculptures are part of private and public collections throughout the United States, including the City of Bellevue Public Arts Collection (Bellevue Botanical Garden) and the Harborside Park in Bremerton, WA. Additionally, Robinson’s work was featured on the labels for the 2003 Artist Series Meritage wine, created by renowned Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery. I have become aware of some aspects of my sculpture over time, such as the tendency to find subtle simplicity in my figures. This is seen in the subject form and surface quality of the sculpture. Growing up in small western towns of the United States I enjoyed feelings of peacefulness and solitude that mountains and prairies have to offer. I have to say that through my sculpture I find these feelings again. Many different sculptors both non-representational and figurative have influenced me. Henry Moore, Leonard Baskin, Noguchi Brancusi and Ernst Barlach are some of my favorites. I have tremendous admiration for primitive art as well as American Indian art. I am always in awe of African art. My work is always moving toward this simplified and mystical direction. After growing up in the smaller towns of Texas, Wyoming and Colorado, Craig studied at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. There he earned a B.A. in Biology and an M.A. in Sculpture. Craig worked at Shidoni foundry in Santa Fe, NM for 17 years. He worked with many famous artists, while mastering his skills in all phases of sculpture production. Craig left Shidoni in 1997 to devote himself to his own work. He has been represented in various galleries and exhibitions as well as receiving awards. Images of Craig’s have appeared in various publications. His work possesses an exquisite sense of form yet of mythical quality that is present. His sensitivity for the subject is clearly evident while subject and form blend perfectly

Cast bronze sculpture with classic green patina on black marble base. Edition of 3 at this size. Other sizes and patina finishes are also available by commission, please inquire for more details. Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia

Born in Pasadena and raised in Orange County, Elizabeth Turk earned her M.F.A. at the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. In Turk’s work, the shape of the line is created by extreme loss. That is, the reductive process of carving creates a positive, fragile form in which the absence of the original material is a focus. Turk encourages us to consider how nature has shaped these organic materials long before the artist’s manipulation of them into new forms. When viewed as components in a complex natural system, their singular beauty and inherent mystery is revealed. Turk compels us to view works of art not only as objects to be coveted and collected, but also as expressions of the natural world and our evolving relation to it. A recipient of numerous awards, including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2010), a Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Fellowship (2010), and a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2011), Turk is internationally recognized for transforming her signature medium of marble into strikingly intricate objects that defy convention and challenge our preconceptions of what marble can do. Through the use of electric grinders, dental tools...
