Rene Murray
"CASTLE CHANCELLOR", porcelain clay sculpture, turquoise glaze, royal court

2013

About the Item

CASTLE CHANCELLOR is a porcelain clay sculpture with Turquoise Glaze and slip, by Brooklyn, New York artist Rene Murray. It measures 24"H x 22"W x 11"D. It's an enchanting royal court figure and a unique artwork. "Castle Chancellor" is part of a series of fanciful figures, as the artist states below – From Rene Murray – "These figures are members of a royal court existing somewhere in the realm of dreams. In their own windowed medieval castle bodies, the courtiers have heads that sport fanciful hats. They are colossal figures with smooth, mask-like white faces." Deep in the heart of the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, artist Rene Murray runs her studio building, complete with gas-fired kiln – creating vessels both functional and sculptural using the age-old techniques and conventions of the potter. Rene Murray's work is in museum collections – both the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, Michigan and the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, New York – and private collections across the United States. Her work has shown in gallery solo shows and group shows, including the Clay Art Center, Port Chester, NY; Greenwich House Pottery, NYC; San Antonio Art Gallery, San Antonio, TX; Art In Clay, BWAC, Brooklyn, NY; Funke Fired Arts Gallery, Cincinnati, OH; and the prestigious SOFA CHICAGO Art Fair. Rene Murray completed her Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics at the University of Michigan in 1964. She was the first woman at the University of Michigan to do so.
