Beth Carter
Beth Carter is a Contemporary artist whose work — which includes sculpture and charcoal drawings — draws from the deep well of mythology. Her winged harpies and minotaurs are updated for the purposes of creating modern allegories so that her efforts to explore the human condition often yield thoughtful marriages of past and present worlds. Carter tells stories primarily through two mediums — her figurative sculptures are typically cast in bronze and she also creates painstakingly detailed works on paper, too.
Carter began pursuing art relatively early in life. She studied at Bath College and earned her BA in Fine Art from the University of Sunderland in 1995. Carter additionally studied at the Cyprus College of Art and the National Academy of Art in Sofia, Bulgaria. Her first exhibition was the 1995 Northern Graduate Show 95' at the Royal College of Art, London, where she won the top prize. Her continuing artistic studies have taken her to India, Gambia, Mexico, Kenya, New Zealand, Tanzania and Sri Lanka.
Today, Carter is based in Bristol and exhibits throughout the United Kingdom. She is represented by galleries in the UK, America and Belgium, and her drawings and sculptures are held in private collections worldwide and in the permanent collections of the Muskegon Museum of Art and the Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins.
Carter regularly collaborates with other female artists as well. In 2020, six of her sculptures were showcased alongside works by painter Helen Flockhart at Flockhart's "Beasts" exhibition at the Arusha Gallery in Edinburgh. In 2022, Carter and artist Olivia Kemp, known for her large-scale ink drawings, exhibited together at James Freeman Gallery in London.

- Remembrances VIIIBy Carlton Scott SturgillLocated in New Orleans, LAmedium: reclaimed button-down shirts, wire, flower frog ARTIST STATEMENT "Flowers have been a large part of my work for years, but they took on new meaning for me in 2020. As our backyards and gardens became a common respite from the fear, isolation, and boredom of the early days of the pandemic, I thought about the ubiquity of flowers in our lives. We use them to celebrate when life is good, as well as to sooth ourselves when it is not. Their ambiguity is what allows them to be such a versatile symbol. As the world became more uncertain, I craved beauty, both in my life and in my work. Fairly quickly the floral motifs that have been a mainstay of my wall installations began to dominate my sculptures and appear in my paint-chip mosaic work. Most of my flowers are created using second-hand shirts sourced from thrift shops. As I shop for materials, I focus on searching for certain colors, textures, and patterns, but I also think about the people who once cherished these items of clothing. I think about how the shirts end up here. Did the size or style no longer fit the owner? Or maybe it was part of the final Goodwill run after a loved one passed. I like to think that an article of clothing can have a memory, retaining the essence of the person who wore it and that once transformed, a little bit of that spirit becomes part of the artwork. Over the years, since I started making flowers from shirts, I’ve had many people tell me that a petal or a leaf is made from the same material as a shirt that they once had. I often wonder if objects can circle back and reunite with their previous owner. I realize that the odds are slim, but they’re not zero. If you have donated a shirt to charity in New Orleans in the last couple of years, then there is a chance that a little bit of it is hanging on the gallery wall right now." BIOGRAPHY CARLTON SCOTT STURGILL was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1971 and is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati (B.A. 2002) and Chelsea College of Art and Design (M.A. Fine Art 2005) in London, United Kingdom. His multidisciplinary body of work includes painting, sculpture, collage, and installation and incorporates a wide variety of materials, with a particular emphasis on repurposed everyday objects. His site-specific floral installations created using second-hand button-down shirts have been displayed in settings as diverse as the Drifter...Category

- Contemporary Ballerina Sculpture of a Dancer 'Last Dance' by Benson LandesBy Benson LandesLocated in Shrewsbury, Shropshire'Last Dance' by Benson Landes is a stunning 20th Century Solid Bronze Nude Figurative Ballet Dancer. For Benson Landes, sculpture was most definitely a passion. His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14. The sculptor admitted that his time as an apprentice at his father’s clothing workroom and factory was given rather reluctantly, as he always harbored desires to become an artist. The young boy’s sense of responsibility was clearly equal to his creativity, though, as Benson knuckled down...Category

- Contemporary Life size Wildlife Patinated Sculpture 'Tortoise' by Tobias MartinBy Tobias MartinLocated in Shrewsbury, Shropshire'Tortoise' by Tobias Martin is a Solid Bronze Animal Sculpture. Tobias Martin was born in 1972 in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons and Alfred...Category
