Diadji Diop
…dans le bonheur II

2023

About the Item

| About the work This particular artwork is part of the serie dans le bonheur, started in 2009 with a special request from Elysee Palace in Paris that was acquired by the National Museum of Immigration History in Paris in 2011. A child of another South, Diadji "gives body" to this word , Fraternity and enriches the lexicon of plastic expressions known in Morocco with characters, inhabited by an infinite serenity, who go through the trials of the world with great effort and empathy. These works reveal a great sense of values, but also of questions specific to the societies of the so-called South and the relationships between them. This is a journey into the land of Fraternity, which erases the perceptible differences that pit people against each other, to show only the values that can still bring them together. Small, simple effigies, soaring, colossal, monumental, through over twenty sculptures presented at this exhibition, Diadji Diop offers a moving encounter with powerful figures of vivid colour and disconcerting serenity. | About the artist Diadji Diop arrived in France in 1994 with the intention of training as a cartoonist. He discovered the multiple possibilities of sculpture in preparatory classes, which led him to change direction. His passion for cartoons and cinema has always fuelled his work, whether in his choice of realism or in his installations, which are sometimes narrative. He graduated with honours in 2001 and took part in the Exhibition des Félicités in 2002. An artist of international renown, Diadji Diop has left an indelible mark on the art world. In 2009, his presence marked the European Heritage Days at the Elysee Palace. In 2017, his participation in the prestigious Palm Beach ArtFair in Miami drew unanimous acclaim. In 2022, a surprising new monumental work emerged on the roof of the Mikado MJC CS art centre building in Annecy, as part of the Lyon Biennial. Diadji Diop established himself as one of the key figures at the Dakar Biennial in 2018 and 2022, where one of his major pieces, "Naaw Naan", stood out, testifying to his unrivalled talent in contemporary art. His work has been exhibited in a number of prestigious venues, including the Emmanuel Perrotin gallery, La Villette, the Abidjan Visual Arts Festival, the Molitor in Paris and is part of the collection of National Museum of Immigration History in Paris, since 2011. His artistic work explores themes such as identity, exile and violence, using realistic forms to question human relationships. He reveals painful interiorities without ever sinking into pathos, with a combination of humour, strength and sometimes derision. His work is a call for dialogue and sharing, transcending differences of skin colour, borders and hatred.

"Light Whispers" Dimensions: 17" x 12" x 5" Medium: Clear Acrylic Resin Edition 182/300 Frederick Hart's "Light Whispers" is the perfect name for this lucite sculpture that studies translucency's impact on the interplay of shadow and light. The nude woman subject is repeated several times, with varying degrees of revelation. In some iterations, she is shrouded in mystery, while other representations show her on full display with remarkable detail. Thanks to his impeccable eye for detail and technical precision, Frederick Hart is considered one of the world's foremost figurative sculptors. His classical techniques make for timeless, traditional works, but the innovative and modern use of lucite as a material help modernize the work. Frederick Hart's "Light Whispers" is signed by the artist and includes a gallery certificate of authenticity. It is from an edition of 300 and the current gallery retail price for the piece is over $16,000. About Frederick Hart As one of America’s greatest representational artists, Frederick Hart left a lasting and unique mark in the world of modern sculpture. Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1943, he studied at the University of South Carolina and after protesting alongside black students during the Civil rights movement, he moved to Washington D.C. to continue his studies at the Corcoran School of Art. Fascinated with the human figure and the classical approach, he started developing his career in 1966 as a stone carver apprentice at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. Leaving the Cathedral in 1971, Hart started his own studio practice but had little success in the first years. In 1974, he was awarded the project by the Cathedral to create a contemporary interpretation of The Creation, an event that would change his life. Soon, Hart’s career took a turn for the better, and in the upcoming decades, he rose to national prominence, becoming a government art advisor in 1985 and receiving the prestigious Henry Hering...

"Transcendent" Dimensions: 19" x 11" x 9" Medium: Clear Acrylic Resin Edition 96/350 Frederick Hart's 1991 “Transcendent” lucite sculpture is imbued with a truly sublime presence. Female and male figures emerging from the Lucite seem to appear and disappear within the work. This ghostly effect is created through Hart’s unique process of embedment, which involves casting one acrylic work within another. It is a technique the artist patented in 1982, marking the end of a decade of constant experimentation and progression and the beginning of a period of precise refinement. Consistent with his unique poetic vision, the inner, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual forces dominate the work. Imbued with a distinct sense of grace, this piece is a testament to Hart’s remarkable technical abilities and devotion to the craft. Frederick Hart's "Transcendent" is signed by the artist and includes a gallery certificate of authenticity. It is from an edition of 350 (+ 60 AP) and the current gallery retail price for the piece is over $40,000.
