About the Item

Woman With Bowl Francisco Franklin Sculpture carved in Arizona Alabaster 1987 Hand signed "Francisco" 9.25 inches H. X 7 inches W. x 4.13 inches D. This wonderful stone sculpture perfectly captures the naive style represented by the body of the artist's work. This piece is in excellent original condition. Frank Francisco Franklin is an American artist whose roots are strongly linked with those of the Mexican people and culture. His powerful style and imagery reflect those ties and influences, and capture the muted beauty and strength of the land and people he came to love as a boy. Born in Tucson , Arizona in 1947, Franklin moved to Caborca, Sonora, Mexico with his family when he was five. He spent his formative years here among the Mexican people. It is this period that left the greatest impression on his life and his art. He began painting as a child and is a completely self-taught artist. His large body of work includes stone and wood sculptures, paintings, drawings, murals and carved panels and wood doors. Franklin has become one of the leading naive artist of the Southwest. His work is in collections across the United States and on permanent display at the Museum of Folk Art in Berlin, Germany. "I owe much of my happiness to the Mexican people. When I was a kid I tried to be one of them. I did not completely succeed. With paint I tell the story of how they have always been for me. Therefore, my paintings are like having a broken love affair that never ends."

  • Victor Salmones Signed Bronze Bust of a Young Child
    By Victor Salmones
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
An untitled signed bronze sculpture by the Mexican artist, Victor Salmones (1937 - 1989) from an edition of 10. Numbered 1 of 10. Signature "Victor Salmones. 1/10" in cast. In excellent original condition. Victor Salmones (1937-1989) was the most widely known sculptor living and working in Mexico during his lifetime. His sculptures won him universal acclaim and are held in the collections of museums, corporations, cities, universities and private collectors in some 30 countries. During his career, he was highly sought after and increasingly involved in the execution of commissions for major public works around the world. Salmones developed his love and talent for creating sculpture by working with clay in high school. He attended the Instituto de Bellas Artes (Mexican National Institute of Fine Arts), where he was an apprentice to the Bauhaus master, Otto Hoffman. He was trained to use the exacting, age-old lost wax method of casting and worked principally in bronze. Hoffman's encouragement led to the opening of Victor's own sculpture workshop in Cuernavaca in 1966. In 1967, Salmones’ fluid bronze “Adam” won first prize at the Biennale Exposition of the National Museum of Modern Art. His work continued to win the highest critical acclaim at subsequent Biennale expositions, and in 1971, over hundreds of entries, his life-size bronze Narcissus...
